Thoughts on the Tamron 18-400

I have a Nikon D5500 with the 18-140 Nikon lense. Thinking of getting the new Tamron 18-400 before a trip to Panama next year. Any experience with this new Tamron superzoom?

I have had one for about a month. I also have a Nikon 70-300mm that I purchased last summer. I like the idea that I can go wide and long with the Tamron and it's very nice.
I shoot a lot birds, and the Tamron is difficult to handle, the Nikon lens focuses much faster.
The Tamron is fine most of the time, but every once in a while it doesn't want focus and with grind in and out looking for the right spot.
I spend as much time with the AF off as I do on.
It's large enough that a steady focus is a 2 hands or tripod needed for long shots. (I use a monopad most of the time.)
I'll post some shots I took with both lenses in the gallery, look for Morganser Posers

I have always recommended to use Nikon glass with Nikon bodies but I have nothing against others using independent lenses.
I was recently at a workshop here in Miami sponsored by Tamron and I saw many images made with the Tamron 18-400 and they looked very good to me.
I do not see why you should not do well in Panama using the Nikon 18-140.

Read the reviews. They are everywhere on the internet. Just google and you be able to read all day about this lens. Personally I tend to stick with Nikon. As of this printing Nikon only has a 18-300. So if you want the range go for it. Keep in mind that when you go to sell it, if you do, you will get less for it than you would if you had a Nikon lens. Suggestion, on third party glass I up my VIVID settings on my camera, in this way it helps the third party glass catch up to my Nikon equipment and improves the color of third party glass.

Good lens. Sold my Nikon 18-200 and bought the Tamron 18-400. Used last Sunday with my D500. Well built.

Here some shots from two weeks ago.
I have tried to show different focal lengths.
I like it in bright light.
I have tried to capture some spiders, but it was too windy to get the web to stay still, for auto focus.
Also please check my previous posts:

I do not know how to make a link on this site.
Plus I posted this response to an old post.Oops
