Is there a raw converter for the Sony A6500. I have had to rent Adobe CC to open the files, but in many ways my Photoshop CS6 was just as good. I would like to not have to rent it.

Sony's play memories, which you can download with the camera, should do this. And you can also get CaptureOne Express for Sony cameras at no charge (the full, Pro, version of C1 for Sony can be had for $50).

Right. That's included with all types of Sony cameras, even their camcorders. I avoid that program as much as possible, but it seems you have to use it with camcorders.

Lots of info here about Sony raw files. I've found that Irfanview can open anything.

Why would you avoid Play Memories? It's simply a site you got to in order to purchase apps that enhance your camera's capabilities.....

I WOULD have the same issue, still using CS6. You can get a add-on converter for CS6 and ACR to convert Sony Raw to DNG (raw). The last version of ACR CS6 can use is 9.1.1, several years old now. I am on my last version of ARC too. It works with my Pentax K-3 camera, but had a bought a K-3ii I would have to use DNG or go to a Ps CC subscription. In my case my Pentax cameras can create themselves either DNG or PEF (pentax raw).

Darktable should convert a Sony A6500 file. Linux, Apple, a testing version for Windows. It is free.

It screwed me up on a bunch of photos (or, probably more likely, I did something wrong, but couldn't figure out what it was...). The customer service for this product was completely unhelpful, and kept bouncing around my issue amongst themselves, without ever really responding.

In contrast, I've found C1s customer service incredibly responsive - quick and accurate responses and, the one time I couldn't figure out how to do something, they got online with me and walked me through it via a shared screen.

"Is there a raw converter for the Sony A6500."

Adobe gives away the "DNG Converter" just so that you can keep using CS6!

For those bent on avoiding Adobe, I learned yesterday that Topaz gives away a version of their "Topaz Studio". It reads RAW files, lets you make common adjustments and you can save to JPEGS, TIFFS or PNGs. Topaz would enjoy it if you bought various other of their fun to use products, but it is not necessary.

Although IrfanView, one of my all time favorite programs, can open those raw files, it appears to be opening the embedded JPG. I would not want to use it for raw conversion.

RawTherapee and Darktable can do the job. On a Mac, you also have the option of "Raw Photo Processor 64". There there's Adobe's DNG converter. This is all in addition to the aforementioned Sony Edit (new version of their converter with additional features) and Capture One , free Sony version. And, back to Mac, Photos can do it and export JPG, TIF or PNG. And don't forget Luminar 18 for Mac or Windows.

Capture One is a excellent program -- it does not replace all Photoshop's functions, but reviewers often favor it over Lightroom as a raw converter with many editing capabilities. I started with the free Express version for Sony, then once I was comfortable with it, moved up to the Pro version. It is all I use for PP, and I am very happy with it. As with LR and PS, there is a learning curve, but there are lots of very good tutorials and webinars on the Internet. As mentioned already, C1 customer service is also excellent.
