here's a link. Just take a picture, upload that picture from your sd card, and it will give you a count

Any decent Exif viewer will show it for a Nikon.

You need a jpeg image. The site I used the other day wanted the smallest size jpeg.

The first site I tried didn’t work.

Easy, and lots of choices.

http://regex.info/exif.cgi
Get Irfanview (free) and also get the plug-ins for it. Start the program, open a photo, click on Image > Information > Exif info. Or you can just press I and/or E to get lots of info.
Get ExifInfo - also free. Unzip and get the icon onto the Desktop. Find a photo and drag it onto the icon. A window will open with loads of info. Look down the list for Shutter Count (or whatever they call it).

I asked that same question when speaking with a Nikon service tech yesterday and was told that I could use one of the sites on line but told me that there is no assurance that the reading will be correct. She said that they (service techs) don't have the ability there at Nikon and they have tried taking photos and sending the same photo to several online sites only to find the count to vary site to site.

Either that "tech" was a new marketimg dweeb, or you misunderstood something.

Nikon puts the shutter count into the Exif metadata. Every program that reads Exif data will see exactly the same value. That does not, however, mean the Exif data has not been altered, just that if it is wrong all readers will report the same wrong value.

For example I very commonly change various parameters in image Exif data, including the shutter count. It is a matter of privacy.

That hasn't been my experience. I wonder if those site take the picture you send them and use another site to check the number.

When you process a RAW file in PS (or maybe other programs as well, I don't know) an EXIF info sheet is generated as a .xmp file. Go towards the bottom and you will see an entry "aux:ImageNumber=..." and your shutter count follows the = sign.

I don't have t o count shutters. Every one of my cameras has 1 shutter, so all I have to do is count the number of cameras. ( I just couldn't help myself)
