Just musing this morning. All the discussion of the light weight purpose of mirrorless systems and how many large lenses defeats this goal got me thinking. How laughable some of this is when the opinion is being expressed by someone who is 50 to 100 pounds overweight. Certainly an effort to shed a few pounds could negate the small difference between a DSLR and a Mirrorless equivalent? Happy Holidays may you and your kit cumulative weight lose a few pounds this new year.

OMG, that is a good point. Not many 100 lb. Cameras, not even a 11x14" view camera unless it is on an old huge Majestic Brand tripod!

Some photographers may find that personal weight provides them a more stable foundation!

Sometimes, it keeps others photographers from getting too close and blocking your shot!

And who exactly are you to criticize? Ever think maybe the weight around my fat neck and your skinny buzzard neck is the same? My Christmas wish is to be perfect like you.

Wow, that must have struck a nerve. Seriously, as a physician, I view our national obesity as one of our greatest health problems. Look around. Then go to Toronto, for example, and make note of how many grossly overweight folks you see...almost nothing compared to the US.

I run marathons. I have a lot of friends who are runners. But, whenever we all drive somewhere together, these people who think nothing of running 26.2 miles (some of these people will run one marathon a day for a week.), will hunt around the parking lot looking for the closest parking space to the entrance. Go figure.

Good point on the camera weight. (Its the lens that drives most of the weight delta not the body. The difference in weight of a full frame dslr vs mirrorless is not that big for most dslrs - 1dx and d4 notwithstanding.

Although the weight of the photographer is probably not the real issue either as most of my friends with bad backs are skinny. The overweight guys have trained their bodies to carry the heavy loads and the camera is only a small incremental percentage whereas a skinny guy would see his weight double :-)

I really like the idea of mirrorless not because of the weight, but because of the potential of the focus system. Mirrorless cameras focus on the sensor that is going to take the picture. DSLRs have a separate AF sensor. This will ultimately give mirrorless a big AF advantage.

Regarding camera weight.... For me it is size, space and weight for carry on style travel. It is not about my neck. It is also about improved functionality in mirrorless cameras.

Regarding obesity.... I agree it is a a sad national epidemic. When I get on my soap box it gets political. We have a system that subsidizes corn farmers. Consequently the cheapest thing you can put in a can or box is corn based sweetener. I suspect the rise in corn syrup use parallels the rise in fatness.

Regarding the humor of it... One of the funny things to see is a fat man with a zoom lens on a DSLR h*****g from his neck with it sticking straight out.

In 2008, I weighed 320#. Today, I weigh 183#. And I’m still not motivated to lug a DSLR around with 80# of lenses.

Drives me crazy when I read online reviews of the latest wide angle lens and see people endlessly whine about how heavy it is.
