Single shot Tone Mapping

Since rain and gray is upon us in the NW I thought I'd try a little tone mapping. What do you think?

The second one down looks good. The other two look to much like cartoons. Just my opinion.

In photo #3, the HDR process has introduced gray into the clouds. I have an HDR guide that discusses that. Compare the clouds in the before and after shots. It's been overdone.

How about IR, converting a camera allows us to see what some other animals see as part of their life; Oh! Night vision goggles! Same holds for UV and a bee. With my strong 100 bulb UV flash light at night the flowers, even grass, looks different. I think the "over cooked" description sounds like food. So, is like taking some drug that allows us to taste flavors that ordinary we would not taste, is that over cooking the flavor... pass the salt please! .... OH! is that drug the flavor enhancer MSG?? yep, that ritualistic dash of salt is another.

Not for me either, some times too much isn't better- these are some of them. Try kicking back a bit.
BUT- one thing I really like about your post is you also sent along the originals for comparison, big plus for me. And another thing mostly it shows you are working with your photos, not stealing some one else's work. Which I believe happens often, one particular subject matter comes to mind, but we won't get into that.
How about re-posting them again only kick it back a couple notches- I really like the Woodie.
Again posting the originals is a good idea- Thanks for that

Actually, the first thing I noticed was the amount of detail that was uncovered in these shots and where. In the top photo, tone mapping really opened up the details under the gazebo and the overhang of the building. In the bottom photo it brought out a lot of detail of the reflections in the front fender of the car.
Maybe not pictures I would frame and hang, but interesting technical processing none the less.

I’m thinking there is probably a middle ground. Did you use Photomatix Pro to create these? If so, there is a slider to apply strength to the effect that could be moved to the left. Actually there are many sliders that could be played around with and choices of types of processing. I believe that there’s a function for HDR and you probably went beyond what was necessary with these and it just needs to be pulled back a bit.
