I have been seriously considering the 100 IS Macro lens as my next lens acquisition. I would enjoy the macro capabilities and have some Kodachrome 64 slides from the 70s-90s that I would like to shoot and have as digital images. The 100mm would be covered by my 70-200 but it would have the FOV 130mm lens on my 1.3 crop factor 1D MKIII. Maybe this winter...

Is there an MFD consideration on the 70-200 given you want to shoot slides? Or would you get as close as possible and then crop the result?
(Assuming you dont get the 100 macro)

I am not sure what MFD is but my though is that I can get a nearly 20mp image of the slide with a 1:1 macro lens. I have some extension tubes that I could play with but it just seems to me that a true macro lens would be able to focus closer than the 70-200 and avoid any cropping. I would also just like to get into some more macro shooting too...

MFD on the 100 is about 12" whereas the 70-200 is 3 feet if I am not mistaken. I have found if you manual focus, you can squeeze a little tighter than 12" with the 100L Macro.

MFD with my 70-200 is 3.9 feet but the magnification is only 1:5. But I have focused as close as a foot IIRC with extension tubes attached...

I stand corrected. Thanks, I hadn't realized you could shorten MFD to that degree with extension tubes Todd.

It has been a while but I believe it was in the 12-15 inches range. I may have to pull it out again and see how close I can get it again... I may have been using all the tubes together too...

Best,
Todd Ferguson
