Hand grip.
If I use the strap, diagonally over one shoulder.

So you have both on, simultaneously, do you, Bill? ... How do you manage that?

I use a Jobe camera strap upside down at the hip. With the camera here I can walk around obstacles. My left hand will cover the camera keeping it from swinging when close to a car or something keeping it close to my side when in tight encounters. The strap is diagonal across my chest having no weight on my neck while having full control of the DSLR camera.

Thanks, Jim ...

Oh, by the way ... could you elaborate on this, a little ... for our readers who are a little less informed ...

Sounds kinda inconvenient, there, Waegwan ... constantly switching between a handgrip and a sling-strap, or do you have something in place to make it easier?

With the sling strap, or at least with mine, the camera slides up the strap when you grab it. Just a motion, not really a transition from grip to strap/strap to grip.

I saw a wedding photog in CA with two cameras & slings... Looked like he was trying to take off his bra without taking off his shirt...

Sling. Camera is at right hand. My tripod hangs from snap hooked to sling shoulder pad under my left arm.

Wow, Jeff!!!

Doesn't that make it difficult to walk?

Much less, ride your bike ....

Black Rapid strap most of the time. Op/Tech hanging from my neck.

What's significant about a "Black Rapid" strap, DDD?

And how does that coincide with an "Op/Tech hanging from my neck" ?

Oh, I see, Jeff ... thanks for that ...

Cute analogy you made there about the wedding photographer with two slings ...

I guess they're not meant to be used in unison, huh?

Several responses. Good to be in this conversation... yes, tripod hanging under my arm doesn't work well on the motorcycle. Otherwise, it's easier than trying to carry the tripod. A backpack might work, but I haven't tried that. When hiking out to lighthouses and water falls it's nice to have hands free to avoid doing a header.

Double sling thing seemed to help him manage two cameras. I think one was a short lens for close work and the other a medium zoom. Maybe it was just to impress the audience.

Well, Jeff ... a wedding is a "once-in-a-lifetime" event ... you can't re-shoot a wedding, now, can ya?

So, it's better to be prepared, then ... the short lens, I'm sure - was for "composed" shots ... whilst the zoom was more for candid shots ... smart way to do it!

No, about the tripod ... wouldn't think it would be ... do you do "headers" often, Jeff?

The hand strap is always attached.
I added "D" rings on the camera for the neck strap, that has clips on it that clip on the D rings when used. (Old non-OEM strap.) Hand strap does not really get in the way.

Oh, I see ... so you're using clip-on things ... instead of those nasty thread things, packed with the cameras ...

I had an old silver beaded thing on my old Nikkormat, and one day, one of the clips (which you tightened with a knurled thumb-wheel) broke ....

Almost lost the camera in the sea ... will never use that kinda thing, again ... the base straps are fiddly things, but they DO work, securely ....

Flip-flops, eh, Jeff?

Nasty!!!

And for you - a photographer ... to use those things ... like living dangerously, do ya?

The clips on my strap are permanently attached, no knob tightening. If a the clip was to come off, you need a new strap.

Oh, yes, of course ... I don't even have that particular camera, anymore ... but, I still kept the silver thing as a reminder - never to do that, again ...

On the new Nikkormat EL - I bought, as its replacement ... I just used the base strap ... still on there, now ... some 40 years, later ...

Until recently (about a month ago) never ventured into replacement straps again (although I did buy a leather guitar strap for my Universal) ...

I bought a Navajo Capturing Couture for my Sony alpha a77 II ... just hated the garish strap that it came with ... not my cuppa tea, at all ...

The straps on both the a58 and the a77 ... are nice - sedate leather-ended things with orange on the edges, and Sony imprinted discreetly on one end ....
