I bought a new media card for my new Canon Rebel t6i camera. Does this new card need to be formatted and if so how is that done?
Thank you.

You should be able to scroll through the menu on the camera and find a selection for formatting. It is usually in the "tools" section of the menu list. That section is usually designated by an icon of a wrench. As to whether or not you need to even do so, it's always a good idea to let the camera format the card.

I imagine it's a good idea to format it for your camera, that can prevent future surprises.

As to how it's done, I use Nikon so I can't help you. But cameras usually have two buttons on the body which, when pressed together, will format the card. Formatting is also written up in your instructions and in the set up menu of the camera.

I shoot Nikon, but it sounds like some familiarity with the owners manual may be in order. I also google camera specific queries and find several answers for almost anything. The forum is a great asset as well!

In addition, look in your manual and it will tell you exactly where to find the format command. I recommend that you format initially and each time after you have uploaded your photos to your computer and are satisfied that they are there (plus a back-up). Always do the formatting in your camera.

Always format a new card in the camera!

Formatting before the first use and after you upload the images is the general recommendation. As a test, I have put new SD cards straight into the camera, and they worked fine. Having said that, I follow the general recommendation.

Format it if you like, but, there is no real need for it. It comes formatted FAT (probably FAT 32) which is the same format used by your camera. The only difference is it has some security features on it that a format in camera or on your computer will delete, freeing up a bit more space. With Canons if you put a new, blank card in the camera as soon as you turn on the camera the necessary files are added to the card. If the format is incorrect for some reason (extremely unlikely with a new card) your camera will tell you. It will not write to an improperly formatted card.

And if you don't have the manual, you can find it here for download:
http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/9/0300018249/04/eos-rebelt6i-750d-bim4-en.pdf
ALWAYS format your SD cards in-camera, and in this manual you'll find how, on page 55.

And while you're at it, may I suggest you flip through the manual frequently, there is a lot of information, but too much to absorb all at once.

Yes. Do you have a manual? If so, you would do well to read it. In the time it took you to post on this site you could have located the answer in the manual. Don't start down the lazy road or forever will it haunt your development as a photographer.

Did you get a users manual with your camera? If not, go to Canon's website and download one.

Good topic, I did not know it was recommended to format after uploading images. I thought the memory card was like a DVD, where you only format it once to make sure it is in the proper format for the device to write on.

For most cameras formatting each time you upload is unnecessary. Canon however writes data differently then most. Over time if a full, or Low format, as Canon calls it, is not done the card will lose write speed. That's why you are given that option in the Canon format menu.
