The Hey day of TV (Live - no commercials) - "Jazz Casual"

I seldom watch network "live" TV anymore. I do record some shows - golf, tennis and some PBS broadcasts. I stopped watching NFL, MLB and almost all network broadcasts. Most of my TV viewing is either recorded, so I control commercials, or Netflix and Amazon Prime.

If TV returned to the quality broadcasts of the 50's & 60's I'd be a big fan.

Here's the kind of broadcasting I'd be interested in watching:

You are so right. Other than those rare occasions like the last "Jazz at the white house" under President Obama, it seems you can only find performances like these on PBS. That particular performance stays with me not only because of the quality of the broadcast but also the personnel, which included Al Jarreau in what might have his last live performance before he passed away this year.
Regarding this post, I have to admit that Sonny Rollins is in a class by himself.

Thanks for the feedback. Sonny, Trane & Lester were unique. Maybe I'm just too old, but my preference is for the "good old days" of TV

You aren't remembering it well.

In 1961 FCC Chairman Newton Minnow described commercial television as a "vast wastland", and he was not wrong!

It has not improved either.

I moved to Florida a couple of years ago and still no cable, only internet. Yes I can live with netflix since I have access to two ISP's since I still have a comcast account from Illinois and a Frontier down here so I don't miss much but I don't watch that much TV. I have access to my son in Illinois " on demand" and can "Cast" it to my favorite TV.

As of last month I can't get PBS over the air anymore! That is the stations I watched the most. Have to get a bigger antenna.

The program I referenced was not "Commercial TV" It was Public Broadcasting. I remember it and other programs very well.

Public TV was indeed pretty good.

I worked in commercial TV in the 60s. Getting paid to watch TV cured me forever. I haven't even owned a TV since my kids grew up an moved out in the 80s.

Yeah, I record everything I watch on network TV, and then there's Netflix, Hulu, and Acorn. So, no commercials for me. I tried the Hulu with "limited" commercials - horrible!

Look at the history of this program, and you'll see that is was occasional in nature, only ran for a few years, and only a handful of episodes were done.

Not much has changed. Except for an occasional PBS program with a jazz focus, jazz continues to have very little video programming space in the US.

Because of all of the advertising, I no long er watch programs on tv except when my son comes over. I now watch nearly everything on my computer screen including my movies.

I like to watch football games on TV but I have to admit when the game suddenly reaches a crucial point such as the last 2 minutes and the score is either tied or very close and then they stop everything and shove in a commercial I get very annoyed. It takes away all the excitement that has been building up. But then I suppose that without the commercials the teams could not shell out those multi millionaire salaries that they do! I always record other programs I am going to watch so I can view them and zip thru the commercials.
