I am thinking about putting a Sigma
150-600 on my D500. I think the combination would be great. Does anyone have any experience with it?

I use a Tamron 70-200 f2.8 on my D500 so I’d guess a 150-600 will be 2-3 times better. Either way, sounds like a great combo.

All of my experience has been with the Nikon 200-500 f5.6 on my D500. This lens was developed to work ONLY on my Nikon, it was engineered to work PROPERLY with it. Nikon uses Nikon engineered glass manufactured from scratch by Nikon. Sigma lenses are designed to work on SEVERAL camera bodies, Sigma buys there glass from a third party glass manufactures (using lowest bids to buy glass, is this what you really want?), they only put the parts together in their factory. Don't get shorted with IQ, one of the best ways to guarantee great IQ is to keep your lenses Nikon, you bought the camera body cause you trusted the brand, now stick with it and you will be happy for the rest of your life. Happy holidays and keep on shooting until the end.

I have the Sigma 150-600 on my D500. No issues, no problems, however, I thinking of replacing it with the Nikon 200-500 instead.

The Sport is far sharper than the Contemporary - I've tried them both on a D500. I currently use a D810 and a D800 with the Sport. I found the Nikkor 200-500 lacking slightly in sharpness, but the deal breaker was build quality and weather sealing. The Sport is in a different class when it comes to that.

I shoot the Sigma 150-600mm Sport on both my D500 and D850. It has been a workhorse for almost 3 years now for me and performed extremely well on several bodies over that time. Key feature is that its fully weather sealed, the only super zoom lens that can say that. My bodies are all weather sealed so I have no use for a ling lens that isn't. Sharper and more reach than the Nikon as well. Downside is the weight at just North of 7 pounds.
If weather sealing is not important to you I would recommend the Tamron 150-600mm G2 model, its better than the Sigma Contemporary version in all respects.

I have both Sigma 150-600 lenses, Sport and Contemporary and I have the Nikkor 200-500. The Contemporary is a Nikon mount and the Sport is a Canon mount. Here's how they stack up in my opinion.
The Contemporary has slightly more reach than the Nikkor but IQ from the Nikkor is better plus, if low light isn't an issue, I put a Nikon 1.4 TC on the 200-500 and it works quite well.
The Sigma Sport beats the other two lenses in both build quality and IQ plus the matching Sigma TC work quite well, and the Sport may be fine tuned with the optional dock. Down side, the Sport is heavy. It can be tough to handhold after a while so I use mine primarily on a tripod.

I've been out shooting with that combo a few times and I'm happy with the results so far.

These are shots from about a month ago.

I use a 150/600 on a d810 I'm happy with it. almost every review I've read says the Contemporary gives a sharper image than the sport.

A friend of mine on fb is, perhaps, the best photographer that I know. He does wildlife photography and, to a great extent uses the Sigma 50-500mm combined with two Canon dx cameras. He's been around the world, Bali, Costa Rica, Namibia, Kenya twice and his production of outstanding photographs is phenomenal. He IS considering purchasing the Sigma 150-600. If it's as good as the 50-500, I'm sure you'd be more than pleased.

I use the Sigma 150-600 on either my D5 or D500. On both, it performs outstanding. I shot the Sport model (rented it), then shot the Contemporary, (borrowed it). Guess if i was shooting for a major publication like Nat Geo, I could justify the $1000 more for the Sport. I am very pleased with the contemporary. I primary shoot drag racing, extremely fast action.

Yes. They work extremely well together. Save money and go with the Contemporary unless you need the weather sealing. The Sport may be a tad sharper and has better build quality. But in terms of image quality the difference is marginal at best. If you shoot with the Contemporary and then switch to the Sport the only obvious thing you will notice is the difference in weight. You will not see anything image wise that comes close to the thousand dollar difference in price.

I can appreciate your dilemma. I too wrestled with the big boy decision of what to pair with my D7200 with. Nikon 200/500 or Sigma 150/600C.
In as much as I shoot primarily wildlife, I wanted as much reach as I could muster with as much clarity. We all want that. I eventually went with the Sigma C and USB Dock for updating.
When my camera is in 1/3 crop, I'm shooting almost a 1200mm lens, and it shows. I don't need any 2bys or 1/4bys I just get closer. As far as continuous shutter, 6fps is plenty with a 100 frame buffer and I've never needed that. I purchased mine shortly after they came out and looked at the comparisons and then never looked back. I really wished Nikon came out with a bigger lens to compete but they haven't. All my other lens are Nikon.
If you're gonna jump, you might as well with both feet in. I took these pics with a willing subject last week, and think you'll be extremely happy with your choice. Or rent one of each and check them out thoroughly before purchasing. Either way, Enjoy your Holidays and keep Shooting till you find the combo that makes you happy !! Buy the way I have 2 D7200's one for wildlife and the other for Landscape ,Sunrise. Sunset pics. I hate changing Lenses. Enjoy the pics too.

Very nice images.
Can you say roughly what the range was?

Hello WD,

My range was about 30+ yards for these pictures.
Glad you enjoyed them.
