Re: topic of Canon 60D which I bought in 12/2010. I can not offer any suggestions about the 60D other than if the camera is set on AUTO then it will only release the shutter for the amount of light that it reads. I have actually been able to get the shutter to release when the lighting is not so hot. Your pic will have an orange-reddish cast that is actually kind of pretty providing you have the right subject.

My lens is 18-200mm that came with the camera purchased from a camera store.

Welcome aboard.

Do you have a question or are you making a general statement?

Thanks for the reply. I made a general statement but I have many questions ( one at a time) that I will post in the future.

I have the same equipment & shoot around 6:PM in shade.
It seems forever for my shutter to fire. I miss a lot of shots waiting on shutter in sports mode. Any suggestions?
