This is one of the hedgehogs I get in the garden. I put nail polish on him so I can record his weight. I put it in a different place on the other young one I get visiting. This one is not of a weight where he will survive over winter. Last year I found they were eating all over winter..
Very interesting and pertinent, Val.

I agree Bob, I have had as many as 5 in the garden in summer from small to large. If they are a late batch of young that will not get to the weight for hibernation(500 gm) I take them to a hedgehog sanctuary where they are looked after over winter and their returned to the wild in spring...

Our mascot here at UHH.
Yes and because they are in decline here due to road accidents and loss of habitat. People fence their gardens and do not leave a hole for them to get through thus loosing them places to forage for food. In my cul de sac they go from the top garden to the bottom ones through the gardens and get fed in most of them...

Cute little one
They sure are and they make quite a loud grunting noise at the dogs when they find them.
Cute shot. Glad you are looking out for them.

Thanks Bill, It is so nice to have them come to the garden and in summer you can see them on the lawn. I made a feeding station for them so only they can get in to eat the food as it is tinned cat food they like and the local cats would have it if they could...

In case you don't think Big Brother is watching. You mentioned cats, and right under your post I got an ad for walk in cat cages.

Thank you Donna, if we don't look after them there will not be many left soon. Sadly they get killed on the roads. As my village is very quiet at night, we get through traffic from Truro and Redruth morning and evening workers but when they have gone there are very few cars moving so it is safe for the hogs here to venture out at night.. They are so cute when small as not afraid as you can see by the picture in the conservatory.. Dogs are kept out
OMG!! How cute!! Val, are you able to pick him/her up to weigh them??
I told you, my daughter wanted a hedgehog as a pet and there is a woman who breeds them not too far from me... but they are illegal in the city, so she couldn't get one.
Keep us posted on how they're doing and hopefully they are safe over the winter.
