Just purchased the above used lens on eBay. Moving from 100 to 400, the lens doesn’t slide smoothly. Has anyone had experience with this lens to confirm my concern?

You have two choices, one send it back to seller or send it to Canon for repair.

I believe there is a friction setting that can be adjusted on the lens. It rotates and one way is tighter and the other way loosens it. Have you tried that?

I would have expected this zoom lens to slide very smoothly when I’m going between 100 and 400. Is that the type of functionality you have experienced with this zoom lens?

Regarding friction, I have not seen any difference when adjusting the dial from smooth to tight.

Don’t know how to respond to “version“. Can you provide more information where I could find this information? Thanks.

Do you have the push-pull version?

I would say it is a push – pull Since the only way I can move from 100 to 400 and in between is manually.

Definitely check this as the tension adjustment ring is a feature of this lens.

It appears the issue with this lens is the tension adjustment ring is not working properly. I want to express my appreciation for all the comments that helped me to focus on the specific nuances of this lens. I know how to proceed.

That would be a first generation/version, generation II as a rotating collar for the zoom and next to it a ´´tension’´ collar to make it a little more stiff or smooth

Regarding the version, thanks for clarifying the difference. I’m learning something new every day.

So what are you going to do, is the tension ring afoul or Lens barrel misaligned ?

Tension ring is faulty. Will work to have the lens returned and find a high-quality replacement.
