anyone using "GIMP"
I found a free photo processing program called Gimp. Havent tried much with it yet but it claims to be easier and better than photoshop.
Has any one tried it? Comments?

I have not used Gimp but there are quite a few others on this forum that do. Hope you get a response from them! I myself use PS CS5.
I begin using GIMP around 96 or 97 went I was still shooting film and my computer OS was Linux. My wife had this thing about storing her images on disk and I would edit them. We also had Adobe Elements, but I found GIMP much more to my liking. I still use GIMP for some stuff. There are some things that I can do with GIMP that I have found others using Adobe had to jump through hoops to do, if they could do them at all. It is not all that easy for most people to learn because of the small amount of information. GIMPs power comes into play when it is in the hands of a computer programmer, it is open source and can be expanded in ways that Adobe will probability never see. If you are wanting free and easy to learn look at Paint.net (WIndows OS only) and check out its plug-ins. I don't use Paint.net but my wife has switch from Adobe to it.
If you are determined to use GIMP there are two books that I can recommend, and neither is great. The first is "GIMP 2 for Photographers" by Klaus Goelker, the second is "Beginning GIMP from Novice to Professional" by Akkan Peck. The second is the better of the two.
GIMP is extremely popular outside of the U.S. and has been used by some European photographers in images that will put a lot of work done with Adobe to shame, but this has more to do with the skill of the photographer and his/her editing than than the editing software. I have also seen comparable work with Adobe. The reason that I tell you this last bit is because you will hear people trashing one or the other. Ignore them, because both sides will be talking all kinds of trash. There are very different and good reasons to use either product.
I have been a fan of GIMP for long, more out of necessity than any other reason. Amatuer photographers in India cannot even afford Adobe PS elements, leave alone CS5, lightroom etc. It takes a bit of patience to learn its somewhat obscure ways, but it does an excellent job.
I used Gimp for a couple of years until I got Photoshop. I still use Gimp sometimes when I want to do something that I can't figure out how to do in Photoshop.
There are lots of free plugins and filters for Gimp, and there is one plugin that you can install, that will allow use of some Photoshop filters.
I'm also interested in GIMP, so I'm curious why it was you switched to PSE?
I own PSE 4.0 and was happy with it, although that version did not have curves and levels. So I'm wondering whether to lay out another $100 for PSE 10, or try GIMP.
Gimp is free. I'd try Gimp first and decide if you want to pay money for anything else.
I have been trying to learn Gimp, but I had a program years ago that was really wonderful. It was called Fauve Matisse and wow the stuff it could do.
Example: you have two pix, select one on screen and the other in another window, then select airbrush and spray whatever part of the second pic onto the first one.
Has anyone seen this in a program that will run in Vista??

I use GIMP and have had good results.
I like the unsharp mask to get my photos "cleaned up"
There is a free add-on, David's batch processor that will let you do multiple photos at one time.
Once I found the add-on, processing speeded up a lot.

What OS are you using? If Ubuntu there is a much easier program called Kolourpaint(freeware).
For Windoze, try Irfanview (freeware).
been using irfanview for years but it doesnt do much
Oh, really? I found it can do QUITE a lot.
What do you want that IV can't do? Maybe you just need some instruction.

Humm... looking at the site for irfanview I see nothing about curves, levels, Channel Mixer B&W conversion, mask, layers, local contrast adjustments. The list goes on. Maybe it is in there somewhere, but I didn't find it. It looks more like a heavy viewer not a true editor. Certainly will not compete with GIMP, Elements, Paint.net, or PSP.
I've been using GIMP for several years. It was discouraging at first, but now it's my go-to program, and most everything is second nature to me.
However, there are still new things to learn. There's no way I've exhausted its resources.
I hope you stick with it. Don't give up. You'll be glad you have this program in your editing tool-kit.
I LOVE GIMP!! I have'nt been using it for very long, but tutorials on YouTube, have been helping me expand my knowledge of the program.
