D850 Custom Settings

Just wondering if anyone else has run into this. When I goto CUSTOM SETTINGS --- F1, Custom Control Assignment on the D850, I assign functions for those buttons where a simple "push" does the job. But when I then try to assign functions to the Pv and Fn1 buttons where you push the button and turn the command dial to perform a different function, the camera changes the assigned setting for PUSH only to NONE and keeps the setting for PUSH PLUS COMMAND. Can't we set AND KEEP both settings somehow?

In some cases, the settings will stick, but in others, you can only choose a single option. Depends on what you're setting. For example, I can't set an AF area mode with a press and also have that same button scroll through crop modes. However, I can set the button for spot metering and have it scroll through crop modes.

Steve, can you post a few NEF produced by the D850?

All exposed at base ISO, fixed Aperture, use of tripod, no specific subject.
One -4 (or 5/6)
One correctly exposed
one +4 (or 5/6)

If needed I can send you my e-mail via PM to get them.

Nope.

But I have a good reason :)

I'm traveling right now with minimal internet - it would take forever to upload anything of that size.

I haven't actually run into this but I have been configuring a D500 and just read that this is normal. Some buttons can have a push command and a push plus command while others can only accommodate one or the other. If you add a second command to a button that cannot handle both, the originally programmed function will be deleted. As Steve said, it depends on which button and which commands you are trying to assign.

Thanks, Carol. You know I read thru the directions on this a dozen times. After your comment, I went back yet again and, yes, finally a light goes on. Now I get it. Thanks for taking me into the light.

Glad I could help. Some of this stuff can really make your head spin. Programming all the button and dials took me forever and I will still probably have to go back later!

Remember to write down what you did so that if you have any service work done or have to do a two button reset, you'll know what you did and the reprogramming will go faster.

Excellent advice but I'm already there! I started an Excel spreadsheet with all the items and choices I made. I have only set up the first bank of settings and having the spreadsheet will make it much easier to set up the other banks when I'm ready.
