Dedicated Flash Units ... they can be proprietary ... or they can be third party ... what's your experience? ...

A recent post response had me going over in my head all the flash units I've collected thru the years. Far too many, I thought. Of course, even with all I have - very few of them are usable with dig cams - at least, not - on camera. On stands, fired by an on-camera flash, it's a different matter. Which all brought to mind - the need for such a post as this. Dedicated flash units made by Canon, Nikon, Sony and Pentax can be so prohibitive, can't they?
But, the third party ones (some of them, anyway) can give you full dedication, without the expense. What ones have you found, to fill the bill? ....

To answer your initial question, my experience has been good, even enlightening. Even including some older or off brand units when combined with more modern triggers. I gave it some thought and the answer came to me in a flash.

How very enlightening, Peter ....

And WHAT was the answer which came to you, in a flash?

I have been giving a LumiPro LP 180 a lot of demanding outdoor use for two years now. I much prefer it to the Canon Speedlites I have. I went to it after reading the recommendation at the Strobist website.

"Short version: The LP180 is rock-solid, with a near-perfect feature set for lighting photographers for under $150. It has been our recommended starter flash since appearing four years ago, and has built a great reputation and solid track record with the off-camera lighting community."

I have a bunch of Canon flashes (580's and 600's), but I also have the cheap, cheap Yungnuo's (600's) and they are playing nice together, they are a bit cooler in color, but overall I like them (for the price), as build quality and dependability surely lacks far beyond the Canon's! But still, they are a good value for the money!

I made a bet with myself, S ... the Yongnuo would be the first alternate name to come up ... it's the second!!!!

Still, any recommendation - is a good one ... thanks, S ....

As far as the Dedication, though ... any slip-ups?

Here's a flash for you, you can use an old high trigger voltage speedlight with a new camera. Once again, you go off on a tangent by starting off with the incorrect assumption.

More time spent researching your daily "survey questions" will result in far better and faster results. How about a little contribution every now and then.

I keep taking the bait and answering the survey questions. Shouldn't we be getting a gift certificate or something for participating?

Mike ... I wasn't aware I was taking a survey ... just asking for opinions, is all ....

As is the case with all my Topic Posts, not are you all here at UHH welcome to participate on a text basis, but you are also all welcome to contribute posts of your photos which underline your responses, and also serve to make the questions more viable. That exposure should be thanks, enough!

Gene ... I'm not sure why you think I don't research ... I do enough to ask the questions I want to ask ....

I suspect you're reading more into them than is there ... that was the case with the last negative comment you wrote, anyway ...

And this link is screwed up ... tried it three times ... each time, it resulted in an error ....

Good, Mike ....

Please feel welcome to contribute on ANY of my Topic Posts ... with comments, or pics - whatever pleases you to do ....

Gene has this thing about "surveys" ... that's not what these are ... just questions, inviting response - that's all!

I have been surprized about how easy it is to use flash units, even if they are 30 years old, with modern digital cameras or even smartphones. Like you say with optical sensor on a stand or in your hand, trigger them with the on-camera flash or even a smartphone flash is easy.
The new ones of course have advantages like faster charging between shots, longer lasting batteries, better synchro with camera etc.

In the end I find it very easy to use old flashes and third party flashes, prefer if I can set the flash amount manually, that is easy and works well. Much better than learning about different auto features in a flash. If I want something automatic or have to work so fast that automatic is the only choice than Nikon flash for Nikon camera is the best choice etc.

Yes, it is fairly easy to use any flash on a stand - provided your on-camera flash is automatic and dedicated ....

But, as far as low-priced alternatives for dedicated flash units - so far we have two: a) LumiPro LP 180 ... b) Yongnuo

Haven't seen any others, JPL ... which is surprising - since there are a whole lotta them out there ....
