Doesn't everything in a car wear out over time ... including the engine

Yes, of course, but a clutch should not fail at 30K miles when driven by someone that is very experienced in driving such vehicles.

The diagnosis came down to a failed component that disintegrated inside a sealed assembly, destroying various other things, so essentially a manufacturing problem. Even with the extended warranty I was significantly out of pocket. It was not normal wear and tear.

In all of my driving history, in all the vehicles I have owned or driven in about 5 decades, I've only had a clutch replaced on two other vehicles, both at over 150k miles.

Subaru America used a wear and tear clause to wriggle out of paying up. In doing so they have lost a customer and damaged their reputation.

Na, I'll just respond. Even though it was diagnosed as a manufacturing fault, they denied coverage because the clutch was considered a wear and tear item. Cost $2000 to fix and the extended warranty was a waste of money. Now it is quite a bad ass vehicle in many ways, more than fast enough, handles the mountain twisty roads quite well at speed, stable in a four wheel drift, but having them wriggle out of being responsible didn't go down well with me. Essentially it is a brand issue. The vehicle is fine, but I no longer trust it, and am reluctant to consider another one.

They didn't deal with 'reliability', and for me the brand is damaged as a result of poor support, not the product itself.

I don't consider this to be off topic if we are talking about use and brand reliability. I'm totally with you when it comes to more information, but it doesn't always help.

I really like Subaru as a brand (my wife is considering one for her next vehicle) but the way they treated you sucks.

Absolutely when dealing with any used camera purchase. Just like mileage on a car, it's an indicator of the life and use of the camera. And the price should reflect accordingly. On refurbished by the manufacturer, I am less concerned about the shutter count when the camera carries a warranty (from Canon, in my case).

On a side note, sorry about the Subaru, Peter. We had a similar problem with our Honda Accord EX, engine went out at 74,000 miles. Just past the warranty period. Honda replaced the engine and paid two thirds of the bill, we covered the other third. The engine was evidently out of balance from the beginning and finally spun itself to death which is why they split the cost with us. But since we got the use of the engine for the 6 years, no problem. Just sold it to a neighbor after putting another 250,000 on it.

Thanks. In your situation it appears that Honda accepted partial responsibilty, and as such has retained your respect for the way that they deal with problems.

That's one of the ways that I assess any organization, how do they deal with problems.

In the camera world on UHH we seem to be happy with B&H, Adorama, KEH, and others, in part because of service, keeping the customer happy. When I received my refurbished Canon 80D from Canon I had some issues that I could not initially understand. It's performance was erratic and illogical. I decided to give it some time so that I could at least explain the problem, and it had an "as new" 12 month warranty.

It turned out to be a bad Canon battery, third party ones were fine. When I called Canon they listened, apologized and shipped a new battery without question or charge. No problems since.

As for shutter count, and information, I have software that tells me those details. I was a little surprised that the refurb 80D had almost 3K clicks on it, even slightly disappointed, but it feels like new, operates flawlessly now, still has 9 months of warranty left, and my trust in Canon remains strong and robust.

I just don't understand why we have to jump through hoops to get the shutter count on Canon cameras, but I don't see a significant problem.

And hey, I can always put a roll of film in my 1976 AE-1 or my 1986 T90, and I'm good to go!
