An interchangeable lens camera or DSLR will almost certainly generate a need for another lens, and therefore kill your $500 budget. I would suggest you look at Panasonic. If size is not critical, the FZ80 is a nice camera for $400. If you want something smaller the ZS travel series might be interesting at $500. I have found the ZS50 to be handy to carry around, but the viewfinder is small and gripping a small camera not always secure. These are both small sensor cameras, but millions of users are very happy and don't see a problem with the results. Crop in camera and you should be fine. Panasonic is also offering a 3-year warranty on many models, no small advantage.

The Canon T6i will serve you well. Read more here: http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/t6i.htm

I would apppreciate your help. I am looking for a good basic camera with a viewfinder.
Up until a year ago, my Sony Cyber-shot with no viewfinder took good basic photos for me. My interest was photos of my grandchildren.

But this past year I have spent a lot of time traveling in an RV. Most of my shots during that time were done outdoors, And needless to say, most shots were a disaster.
I would like a good basic camera with viewfinder for around $500. I am in my late 70’s and no expert.
I have seen the Canon Rebel T6 advertised at Costco for @ $500.
I have also seen mentioned the Canon T6i at B&H. I am not sure what the difference is. Maybe I should be looking at something else entirely.
But any suggestions or direction would be appreciated. Thank you.

I am checking out all the various suggestions, and some, including the bridge camera, I had never heard of before. Your comments and suggestions are forcing me to re-define more exactly what am I looking for in a camera.

... As the sole driver of our Class B RV, I want a simple automatic camera that I can hand to my husband to catch a scene while I am driving.
... I don’t need to be changing lenses anymore. There is no room in this van to store them, let alone spread things out on a mini table to change them. I need one good lens.
... I am not into macro at this time. A good single zoom will be adequate.
... I enjoy taking short videos of my grandchildren, but I think any camera would be adequate for my purposes.
... I now realize that physical camera size really does matter. I want a camera that I will tend to pick up and take with me. It won’t be the size of an iPhone, but I hope I can find something good enough that won’t be too, too big.
I am not an expert, far from it. You have given me some wonderful, varied suggestions.
Thank you.

The only system that I have been able to truely successfully shoot from a moving vehicle was the one I took with me to Germany. It was my E-M1 mrII with the rented new 12-100mm f4 Pro IS lense. It is not impossible to shoot with other cameras from a moving vehicle, just much more difficult. My system that went to Germany was a body, two lenses (covering 14mm to 200mm in 35mm terms), two flashes, a filter, and spare battery. This all fit in an approximate 6" X 11" X 12" bag and weighted just under 7 pounds for the bag and all the equipment in it. The only problem for you is it is well over your $500 budget . Even the E-10 plus the 12-100mm lense is in the neighborhood of $1700 (on sale at this time). But that system would meet nearly meet all your requirements including macro. You may have to settle for a bridge camera, or other style entry level camera, and dial back some of the want requirements. If the requirements are such that you need them, you will have to increase the money you are willing to spend to get them.

Consider these manufacturer/cameras:
Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mk II w/ 14-42mm lens (28-84mm equivalent) $649 (Cyber Week price at B&H Photo) <==
Fujifilm X-T20 $1,099 w/ 18-55mm lens (27-83mm equivalent) $1,099

I am hot-to-trot for the fuji X-T20. If I could justify a SEVENTH camera..

Have you gone to a store and handled an actual T6??? You are arguing against a T6 in this paragraph; they are fairly large, not something that you'll casually pick up and take with you. You might be satisfied with a one lens solution, one of the 18-270 or 18-300 lenses, but maybe not, and you'd have to spend additional amount beyond the Costco deal.

I agree generally but was showing a package for $500 that gave a wide shooting range, as that is hard to do for the price.

Always so many things(aspects) to consider. I've made too many wrong(uninformed) choices in the past. Right about now I wish I had forseen the mirrorless concept. I'm all jazzed about the fuji mirrorless options, but will stay with all my PENTAX DSLRs.

I think the OP said awhile back that he got a Nikon package he is happy with. It should be a good solution for him.

Since your are somewhat familiar with Sony. Investigate the Sony a6000. That should more than met your needs. It’s priced at about $500. You can likely find it for less. Great quality camera.

There are many options. If you are doing mostly scenic photos while RVing a good quality fixed lens camera, of which there are many. Something compact in the form of a slr if you like Canon an SL model is on sale many places may be a step up from a T6i. I like the M6 which is a mirrorless Canon, no viewfinder. But technology that provides sharper images and interchangeable lenses as does the SL2.
