This pair appeared on the pond yesterday. I only got one shot of them when they were spooked by a herd of mallards. I don't know what they are.
Why, those would be water fowl. I don't know either. Good action shot.
What area are you in? That would help.
Nice image. It would, however, be a flock of Mallards; not a herd. Just saying.

This is a pond in southern Rhode Island. The male is white and black with a green banding around his head. The female is just black and white they are a little bigger than the mallards.
Nice. Bufflehead ducks, a male and a female following, I do believe.

Bufflehead pair
In the ponds where I do most of my waterbirds they get along with the mallards and others when they show up during the winter.
Thank you Robert and Mike. They are new to the pond. They were spooked by a group of 8 mallards so I don't know if they will be back. Time will tell.
If they come back they are a hoot to watch. They are divers and they are quick about it. They will be there and then tip over and go under in a splite second. Then pop up somewhere else often several yards away.

Yup Buffle Heads. Sweet little ducks. We were out on the bay today, S.Jersey and there were hundreds of them. They are very skittish this time of the year,,Duck season. They are great fun to watch. They dive very fast,, almost porpoise lol, when going down and pop up like a bobber. The male (drake) the mostly white and black one, is a kaleidoscope of colored in the black areas when the sun reflects off him.
Hi cmc65..........the lead duck, the male, is a bufflehead but I am not sure of the trailing duck. Buffleheads do no usually show an upper white on the upper edge of the spectrum feathers and usually not that white at the elbow feathers but the white at the elbow feather is not as definite as that apparent broken upper white above the lower spectrum feathers (spectrum is at the of the inner wing). The head of the trailing duck is blocked by the wing so it is difficult to discern head and beak detail but from what is in the photo it seems the beak does not come off the head at the same angle as a bufflehead (the leading duck)........the spectrum wing pattern on the second duck suggests hooded merganser (female) though the size difference, at least as it shows in the photo, suggests trailing duck is same or slightly smaller than the lead duck......a hooded merganser should appear bigger than a bufflehead when viewed side by side. Do you have any other shots of the trailing duck? Both buffleheads and hooded mergansers would appear in Rhode Island.
