So, I was thinking of purchasing a new USA version entry-level Sony camera for my wife.
After speaking to a few people who own Sonys say they love them, however, service is another animal.
I was told to expect "very long" turnaround times, difficulty reaching customer service, etc.
and this includes warranty service as well as out of warranty.
Overall, this doesn't give me a warm, fuzzy feeling about dropping bucks on this product.
I did some online reviewing to find not very favorable feedback.
Any input would be appreciated… Thanks.

Yes, there is not immediate, overnight service. Other than that, my experience with having my RX100 worked on was fine. My feelings ARE warm and fuzzy. I would not hesitate to buy Sony cameras.

As I recall, the service is automated. They don't seem to have a bunch of people waiting to talk to you on the phone. I remember going to a website, registering, getting a "flat fee" estimate, shipping instructions and an order number.

I've used Sony service twice -- once for a minor warranty issue and once for a dropped camera -- and had no issues. Turnaround was prompt and communication was easy.

I first must ask, what makes you think that you will have issues with your Sony camera that would requiire you to get it repaired?

I own 7 (4 are retired at this time) Sony cameras and I have never had reason to contact Sony Service.

My point is that it is rare to need Sony Service.

I just got my a-77 back yesterday. They received it Nov 17, emailed me on the 20th, I ok'd price and paid on 21rst in AM it was shipped on the 24th, day after Thanksgiving.
As already mentioned mostly all done through the website (Precision camera, Enfield, Ct.) with phone call to give cc no.
I have no complaints and camera is like new.

Thanks Hoggers for your input. Just texted the people I inquired the feedback from to
find out their info was based on experiences from over two and a half years ago.
Apparently, things changed. Sounds good for me to go ahead with the purchase.

I've had seven Sony cameras with only one need for service. I got salt water in the top of a camera while on a zodiac shore trip in Hawaii. The camera was under warranty and they replaced it after I sent it to their service center. If I recall, it took about two weeks.

Comments like this have appeared here many times, and I find it surprising. Sony is making a lot of money selling a lot of cameras. They should put some of that money into training for service personnel.

I knew someone who sent his Sony DSLT camera in for repair that was out of warranty. He sent it to Precision Camera Repair in Connecticut, a while back. Sony camera repair services are not as efficient as Canon and Nikon. Unfortunately. Their cameras are too good to allow that. Even some pros, who own Sony full frame cameras, such as the a7r2 have complaints about slow repair service.

My A7R-II is in for service now. Estimate for repairs received 24 hours after Precision Camera signed for the package. So far - no problems for complaints.

Agree. I have had two Sony cameras (NEX C3 and a6000) over the past 7 years and have never needed servicing. They have a reputation for reliability, which is one reason I got Sony in the first place.

I recommend Precision Camera. They appear to be a Sony affiliate. I dropped my camera and the lens (24-70mm GM) broke off near the camera mount ring. I emailed Precision Camera describing the damage, got a preliminary quote the same day, sent the lens via UPS, got a final quote the day they received the lens (slightly less than the preliminary quote), authorized the repair, and got the repaired and tested lens back. From the time I first contacted them to the time I got the lens back was 10 days. Sony contacted me three days later with a survey regarding my experience.

I have told my Sony service story SEVERAL times on this board, but that was service from the Texas center when it was opened. I have yet to need service on any of my cameras and consequently, not used the new affiliate in New England.

Needless to say, when I dealt with Sony before, I was given a quote to repair a lens that was near the price for a new lens and above the cost of a used lens. Since it was just out of warranty I decided NOT to get the work done, opting to buy another lens instead, and asked the San Antonio center to return the broken unit to me.

IMAGINE MY SURPRISE when I got it back, COMPLETELY REPAIRED with new parts and FULLY FUNCTIONAL.... For NO CHARGE!!!

The folks at Sony confirmed both the repair AND the lack of charge... but did not give an explanation other than to say "thank you for your business."

So you won't hear a bad word from ME about Sony service unless and until they do something terrible.

I dropped an a6000 from waist high which cracked the LCD screen. Sony had me send to Precision Camera in CT. I got a somewhat prompt response that the screen was unrepairable but after a delay of about 3-4 weeks, they sent me a brand new camera with another 16-50 lens. It was white, but it was free. I would rate their service as more than fair if a little slow. This helped me on my tour of France the next month as I carried to a6000s and hand both 16-50 and 55-210 ready to shoot. About the same weight as my 70D Canon and 18-135.

I sent a lens in to the Authorized Repair Service for Sony and had it back in 10 days. What's not to like???
