I am using bb focus on my Nikon d750. How do I lock exposure once the ae-l af-l button is assigned for focusing?

Steve Perry’s Book and Video is helpful for BBF and settings:

On a Canon, if the autofocus is set to single shot and you BBF, the focus will stick through one or more photos, AI Servo AF will allow the focus to continue to focus after releasing the BBF. I can only assume you have similar controls on the Nikon.

While we are here; when I joined this group a year ago, I had never heard of BBF, and when I did hear of it, I thought - "That is Dumb". Now, after having tried it, I cannot imagine how I have shot for 15 years with an autofocus system using the shutter release to focus.

Thanks to all those here that promote Back Button Focus. For those that do not use the back button - try it! on the canons, it is set up from the custom functions menu.

Life altering. I shoot BBF always and on the 5DmkIV, you can set up 2 BBF buttons. I use one for AI Servo and the other for One-Shot so I can get *beep* confirmation on focus for stills and continuous focus for sports

Steve Perry, who is a member here, wrote an excellent book - "Secrets To The Nikon Autofocus System". I describes back button focus in depth. I've been reading it a lot. You can download it online.

On my Nikon D200, (which has a dedicated AF-ON button as well as an AE-L / AF-L button) I set:

Menu a2 AF-S Mode Priority to Release
Menu a6 AF Activation to AF-ON only

I have also tried setting

Menu c2 Assignment of AE-L/AF-L button to AF lock but I can only trigger the shutter if the AE-L/AF-l button is depressed all the time.

What I wanted to do was to focus correctly on a subject, take a photo, recompose but with my new subject a much further distance away, take a 2nd photo with the 2nd subject out of focus. All this without going to manual focus. Using the dedicated button and the 'a' menus, I can do it, but not using the AE-l/AF-L button.

Good Lord, this is going to sound snarky sorry. Switch to manual and make your settings before getting focus.

Custom Setting C1 - set to On. This will lock the exposure on half press. P 336 in the user manual.

Focus by pressing the assigned button, release, recompose and shoot. You can then re-shoot without refocussing if the camera is still looking at the same subject at the same distance. The video jccash posted shows how to use in Continuous Focus mode.

If you want to use BBF you certainly don't want to lock focus on the half press shutter button.

Reassign the half press of your shutter release to act as AE lock.

You can also reassign one of your function buttons.

I use a Nikon D800 and Nikon D500 and us BB autofocus all of the time with the camera mostly set on aperture priority. When using BB autofocus I first focus using my exposure/focus point. If I were to leave the point where I had focused then that point would be my exposure as well, so it is actually "locked" at that point if I don't move it. This would be the same as using your camera shutter button, with focus and exposure set at the same place in the image. After I focus I move the point without touching the BB autofocus, so I'm only working on exposure, to the place where I want to set exposure for that particular image. The beauty of BB autofocus is it allows you to set focus and exposure at two different points or places in the image. You don't need to use anything else to "lock" focus, you set up the shot, focus, move the point to your desired exposure setting in the image, and click the shutter; upon clicking the shutter the camera uses the point you were set at for exposure. If you use live view you can practice this by focusing, then moving the point around in the live view screen and you should see the exposure change on the live view screen as you move the focus/exposure point.

Press the AF-L button, and exposure will lock.

But the AE-L/AF-L has been reassigned to back button focus. . . He just needs to make sure that C1 is set to On.
