Favorite SLR Canon Elan 7Ne; favorite DSLR Canon 5D. Both favorites because I came to know them so well and could make adjustments on the fly with little fuss or bother.

We all had a favorite, didn't we? ... You may even still have it, right? ... How does your current best DSLR tally up, against it?

Nikon F3HP (I still have one with a special pin-registration back and precision viewfinder grid (reticle) for making multiple exposures on one frame of film (in perfect registration). I had another F3 with an MD-4 motor drive for awhile.

My favorite digital camera is my Panasonic Lumix GH4. Like the Nikon F3, it is tough as nails, weather resistant, and fits my hands like a glove. But it is smaller, lighter, and does a hundred things I could never do with the F3 and any film. Best of all, it is a really fine video camera as well as a still camera. A bonus is that my kit is about 1/3 the weight of my film kit from the '80s, and covers more field of view, more easily, with half the lenses.

My first 35mm camera was a Soligor with a Pentax screw. Was the only camera I could afford just after high school. Got it on a Saturday morning and that afternoon a friend had VIP passes to the airport where the Concord landed and we could walk through it and take photos! Unfortunately I made a major stuff up in my lab while developing the film and have no photos!

During my Military time as a photographer I used an old Nikon F. Hated the bulky camera and had problems with the light meter! While in the Military saw an ad for Pentax MX and managed to get myself a seat on a military plain and flew from Windhoek to Johannesburg and bought the camera! Loved that camera, small and light and had it for years never gave me any problems. Later while in the UK bought a Pentax Z50 which also was a bliss.

Then a sport documentary producer asked me to travel with him into Africa and take photos and to publish them on the internet when we had internet connection. It was at the time digital started to make its appearances and I bought a Fudji FinePix, 2 megapixels. Very impressed with the camera and did its job!
In the meantime I inherited my Dad’s Pentax Spotmatic and did a lot of newspaper work and weddings. Then my career moved into Television and I became a video editor but still wanted to do photography and to develope my own film and print but did not had the free time for it!

When Pentax eventually launched its first digital camera I was not impressed but when the K10 came out I bought one and was very happy until it was stolen. I replaced it with the Pentax K20 and had two bodies, very useful when shooting wildlife in the African bush. Never gave me problems but I battled with flash photography, tried the TTL modes but prefer manual! Again a body was stolen and I replaced it with Pentax K3 as it was launched in South Africa. Love it and decided to add the K3ii as it was on special recently. Now that I became a member of the retirement group I will have more time to sit at waterholes waiting for the bush to become alive and to be captured on digital.

Well, that helps, doesn't it, NB?

Do you miss the eye focus capability you had on the Elan, on the 5D?

Sounds like you started with Pentax, made a couple of tangents along the way, and came right back to Pentax, again, huh, Safari?

So, tell me ... between the two K-3s ... which do you like the best?

Sounds like you finally settled on a beaut, there, Bill - in the GH4 ....

But, don't you miss all the capabilities you had with the Nikon F3HP?

My favorite SLR was a Minolta SRT-101 from back in the early 70s, today it is a Nikon D600. Both great cameras, but digital doesn't yet compare to film, even though it's getting closer every year, damn I wish I would have kept my Minolta.

Earnest ... what do you miss most from the Minolta, you wish you had on the Nikon D600?

My favorite slr was/is my Nikon N8008. My favorite dslr is my D7200. Shot many rolls of K64 as well as K25, now Ektar.
I guess I am the only one for the N8008, bought it right before the upgrade N8008s.
Love my D7200, and still often use my D7000.

Duane

Duane - how would you compare the D7200 with the N8008 ... what do you like best of each camera?

Also, do you prefer the output from the D7000 over the D7200, or vice-versa?

I finally had to post with this one. My favorite was my first. A Voightlander Bessamatic (sp?). Many rolls of Tri-X before it was stolen.

Topcon Uni, known as the Topcon 100 in the states.. Bought it when I was stationed overseas while in Air Force in 1969. Great pictures, and it had a leaf shutter. I really liked it

Not sure, Ray ... not familiar with that one ... sorry it was stolen ...

So, what do you use, now, Ray?

How does it compare with the older unit?

Topcon got out of the camera biz, Dan ... but I hear they're doing well in the Optics Industry ...

What do you use, now, Dan?

And how does it compare with your old Topcon?

My first "favorite" was a Pentax Spotmatic. Ran a lot of transparency and B&W film through it. Next up was a Nikkormat FT3. Later, I bought a Pentax SF-1, and loved the auto focus. I later "regressed" to my all time favorite, a Nikon F3.

I currently have both D500 and D750 DSLR's. Those are great tools.

In a recent "fit" of regression, I bought a nice, used Nikon (F4, FA, FE, FE2, FM2), and several Pentax film cameras (ES-II, SP-II, Program Plus, Super Program). I had almost given up on film, but film is great enjoyment. I also bought back in to medium and large format film.

The F3 was a fine camera, Dennis ... now, wait ... you "bought a nice, used Nikon (F4, FA, FE, FE2, FM2)" .... all at once???

Sounds like you've been catching up a little on the Pentax film cameras, huh? .... What did you get in MF and in LF?

My 1980 Canon F-1. When I moved up to that camera from my Canon AE-1 I thought I had my hands on the best camera I could get my hands on. I still have it and keep it loaded up with B&W film.
I really like my Rollei 35S as it was a great travel camera that shot great full frame 35mm film and my dad's old Rolleiflex 2.8 was a great camera but that F-1 was my main camera until bifocals forced me to consider the Canon EOS cameras. Now I shoot a Canon 1Dx which is just an amazing piece of hardware that I'm still earning how to use properly.

Jack ... why did bifocals force you to consider Canon EOS?

How does your 1Dx compare to your old F1?

My favorite SLR was my Zenza Bronica S. 2 1/4 square. Interchangable lens, back, and viewfinder. It came with a 75mm Nikkor lens. I bought it in Tokyo, Japan in 1962. I wish I still had it. I don't have a favorite DSLR as I have only just ventured into digital photography, and only have one camera so far.

Bronica sure made a great MF camera, didn't they, Jan?

What dig cam did you just buy .... may I ask?
