what the heck was he doing hunting after dark - the law prohibits such thing. And there is no way a woman walking can be mistaken for a deer. A responsible hunter knows better, and you have to be a pretty damn good shot to hit anything from 200 yards... and its impossible with a pistol. Something does not add up with this story. I send condolences to the family of the woman.

I had the same reaction when I saw this news item yesterday and who goes hunting with a pistol. But, on the macabre side, it’s just one of over 30K deaths by firearm we’ll see this year.

Wow. What a total lack of judgement. It will probably be deemed an accident, and he'll just get probation. While her family mourns her death.

I agree 100% with everything you said except about being impossible to hit anything at 200yds with a handgun.

Many people hunt large and small game with a handgun.
However it seems this guy was a idiot.

And over 60 thousand will die from auto crashes, and 150 thousand from medical malpractice!

My only experience hunting was 60 or so years ago using my dad’s lever-action Winchester 94 with open sights so I doubt I could have hit a deer at 200 yards. I saw some marksmen in the Army who were incredibly skilled so a handgun with a scope would probably be good at that distance.

Actually, the reported number was 40,200 traffic deaths (auto, motorcycle, pedestrian) in 2016. Medical errors according to a Johns Hopkins study cause about 250K deaths a year - not a pleasant thought since I’m scheduled for back surgery in a couple of weeks.

I wish you well on your surgery. Try to get out of the hospital ASAP after it as that is where most infections are picked up.

There is absolutely no excuse for this to happen. The hunter should be locked-up for murder or at the very least voluntary manslaughter.

Exactly. But he'll get a lawyer, with hopes of getting no jail time. And he'll start crying in the court room, and beg the Judge to give him probation, because it was accidental. As for being sued? If he has no substantial funds, that won't help the family. I have seen cases, similar to this, regularly happen. Ending sadly for the family.

Reminds me of a few years ago when a former Iowan was living in Maine and went out on her back deck with white mittens on. She was shot by a local who was found innocent of manslaughter as he said she looked like a deer (the gloves supposedly mimicking a whitetail). So, yes, you can mistake a woman for a deer. Disregarded the fact that he was hunting in town.
