Tamron 18-270 Question

New to all of this so looking for opinions. I've done some comparisons online between the regular lens (18-55) that comes with the Nikon 5100 that I'm purchasing next month & the Tamron 18-270. May buy the body only & purchase the Tamron. Reasoning is sheer convenience of not having to change the lens. It would be less expensive to also buy a Tamron 55-200 but I'm thinking if I'm in my car & want to take a shot that requires a zooming in I may miss the moment. I don't want to sacrifice any quality though & plan on taking action shots as well. So, does anyone use the 18-270 as an all around or know if it will work well as an all around lens or would I be better served to have at least 2 lenses? Thanks

My two favorite lens are the Tamron 18-270 and the Nikon 10-24. They are the two I carry most of the time. So much of your decision is on your style of photography. I use the Tamron most of the because of the zoom range and the quality is good. Lens creep can be a problem, I just use the lens lock when not taking pictures. I love the Nikon 10-24 for Landscape and for taking creative shots with unique perspectives. I do not need to change lens often because of the overlap and I usually know ahead of time what my objective is. I am speaking as an avid amateur photograph that does not have to meet any professional standards. I only have to please myself.

Or you could buy just the D5100 body and the "NEW" Nikkor 18-300mm lens.

I got the Tamron 18-270 a few months ago and really like it. I plan to use it for my walk around lens. The reviews are great, and just read in Outdoor Photographer magazine that it is a good landscape lens. What do you plan on shooting?

I have a canon t1i and canon 75-300mm zoom lens and the tamaron 18-270.I really like the tamron and stays on the camera most of the time. It takes good pics has good range and i really like the vb Vibration Control. They also have a 6 year warranty which I think nobody else has and Canon only has 1 year. Do the math as I think it would be a good choice for all-around. I think now the price is between $500.00 to $600.00 probably arounnd $550.

I bought a Tamaron 18-270 lens before my husband & I took a trip to Europe in 2011. Between Ireland, England, Scotland & Paris I took hundreds of photographs. The Tamaron is the only lens I took for my Canon 40D and I was not once disappointed that had not taken other lens.

The laws of optics/physics says that the larger the zoom ratio the more IQ is comprimised. IF your IQ ( image quality) requirements are small or easy to satisfy then these large ratio zooms are for you. However. if you are more particular and want something really nice you will have to move to smaller ratio zooms or prime lenses - and be prepared to pay !

I do my own printing and usually print 8x10s but when I send my photos off to Shutterfly for storage they tell me these will print up to 20x30. All shown have been printed at 8x10 with no problem...........

Great price---I don't know what camera you're shooting but if it does not have the motor in the body then you need to order the lens (PZD) with the motor in the lens. Just a reminder..............

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I think I'll get the Tamron with the 5100 then save up for smaller ratio zoom later. All the photos viewed were good.
