I have a Mac and use Photos. The editing has its limits. Does anyone have experience with using Photos as the main Photo manager and using Lightroom as an editor ?

Do you mean Google Photos? Ah, you must mean Apple Photos. There are alternatives.

You have a lot more control using Lightroom, with both as an asset management and with editing your photos. Also it is a Raw photo developer. I also have a mac and I really dislike Photos. Keep in mind if you decide on Lightroom you will probably have to go with the subscription plan, as Adobe has already announced that they will not be updating after the first of the year.

You really would need to use Lightroom for management and editing - it is not possible to select a file in Photos and edit in Lightroom, you would basically need to export the original from Photos then IMPORT the original into Lightroom to edit it, then export the edited file back out to import into Photos. But then you have multiple "originals" and "edited" files - messy.

If you are happy with Photos management of your files, you can add a plugin to Photos - RAWPower that gives you additional editing capabilities and relies on Photos management, or switch to Lightroom - Lightroom pretty much set the standard for management and being a powerful raw conversion and editing system..

The RAWPower app is available at the App Store for $14.99

Lightroom now comes in two versions that are vastly different.

Thanks to all. I will download RAWPower. Take some photos in RAW and play with it

If you use Lightroom, you don't need Photos. It is a much better organizer.

Its worth noting that you can store photos outside of photo's e.g in lightrooms collection. letting you have both

I recently spent a couple of weekends exporting 10,000+/- photos from Photos to LR. Much as I really liked Photos, it’s worth the effort to switch to LR since LR offers so much more. I recently read ( but cannot confirm) that Apple won’t be updating Photos anymore. Google Photos is probably going to be a better option that Apple Photos.

Not that i'm a huge fan of Apples photos anyway but a google search for that little titbit turned up no results. It's true that Apple have retired iphoto and Aperture and replaced them with photos which may be a source of confusion.

I mostly don't use photo's however if you tell photos not to store your photos and leave them where they are then photos and lightroom both can access the same source photo files.

Why would you want to use "another" photo manager/cataloger if you were to have Lightroom? That is mainly what Lr is, a cataloging program, and a good one. For editing, especially pixel or layer editing there is Photoshop. Lightroom's editing capabilities are limited, fast and efficient at what it does though.

With Photo's you can access Apples raw file editor, there does seem to be some difference between the 2 raw editors, it is personal preference as to which makes the better job of a particular photo.

You really should use Lightroom as your complete solution as it catalogs and creates Libraries of all of your photos.

Mine creates a folder for each date on the photos in the memory card as it imports (for instance, if I shot images on 11/14, 11/15 and 11/19, it will put all of the shots taken on 11/14 into a folder under 2017 into a folder name 11-14-2017 and then all of the ones taken on 11/15 into a separate folder under 2017 named 11-15-2017) You can also create categories to connect to the same photos, like sunrises, sunsets, Weddings, Stepp (Charles and Noelle), etc. If done correctly and is thought out, it can make finding photos of a similar category very easy. I can sort or search on Weddings or on the name attached to the wedding and pull up either ALL of my weddings or that particular wedding. I can also pull up all sunsets, all tornado photos, etc.

currently save all of my photos to a 6tb D: drive but could also create a huge remote raid system and give it a drive number and save everything there. I currently have my D: drive shared on the network and my wife's computer also uses that drive for her photo storage.. I have hers in a separate main folder for ease of separation.

Remember that Lightroom allows 2 (and only 2) computers to be logged into it at any given time, however I have 2 desktops and 2 laptops that use it... If I'm on a trip, I log out of my desktop so that I can log into my laptop on lightroom in a hotel while on a trip. My laptop uses a 1terrabyte external USB3 drive as it's D: drive. When I get home, I can transfer the contents of the usb3 external to my main catalogs. Adobe (the entire Adobe suite) is the ONLY program collection that I've found that allows complete (as far as I've found) compatibility of files in their entire suite of programs. I constantly export Lightroom images to Photoshop, Dream Weaver, In Design, etc.
