Not sure when to use these two options.

"Save" will save the existing copy, with the edits you have made, to the same location (most times on the memory card, but not always)
"Save As" will save a copy, with the edits you have made, to your location choice. You may have to browse to the location or create a new folder at a location.

I save in photoshop format along as save my original raw file. I also save to jpg. 3 copies to two external drives.
A bit much but not really for important images

What Mark wrote. However, since both are capable of being done, each with a different result, what is your intention in saving?

If I am working on a photo that I want left untouched on disk, I load it into elements, then SAVE AS with a different name so I don’t lose my original jpg. If my original file was called IMG512.JPG, I will save my edited file as IMG512e.JPG. If I crop that image I may SAVE AS IMG512ec.JPG, or IMG512ec1366x768.jpg (my laptop screen size). This lets me go back to the original, or any of its subsequent saves.

Also, Save As allows you to rename the image.

Also change the file name slightly. I usually just add a number or an X to the original name so the two will be together in the file name directory

Geez, you guys make things so complicated. I've worked on an image in Photoshop, and clicked Save to bring it back into Lightroom as an xx-Edit file. But, I decide to do something different and do not want to overwrite my original saved file. That is what Save-As is for.

Depends upon the work that you have done.....Taking a small crop out of a larger image I would Save as with a different name - you may want the original larger image again.

If you are happy with your image with a few PP tweeks simply save and move on.

If you work in the new version of Gimp save creates an xfc file NOT a jpeg....you need to 'export' your image and choose JPeg from the menu.

Won't it also save with the original name and over-write the original?

Yes, you are correct. I did not clarify. I meant that by same "location".

Or even as a different format: e.g. if it's .png now, you can Save As .jpg

When you use Save, file name, location and file format do not change. When you use Save As you can change file name, location and file format.
