This morning my wife saw (based on the Merlin Bird ID App) a Stellar Jay (actually 3 of them). In the 20+ years we've lived in this house, we've never seen one of them around. She said it was eating on the ground near one of our feeders.

I have my camera out and hope I can spot one of them - would love to snap a picture or two.

Basil,

If you do not have success wherever you are, come out to any of the Southern California mountains for a day where they are very common.

I hope you get a shot of that bird. What you need is something that will take a shot every couple of seconds, like a time lapse.

What kind of instrument is that in your avatar?

It looks like an electric Mandolin.

It's a bit far, but... Anytime you want to take a photo of a Steller's Jay, you're welcome to our sundeck!
Or a crow, or a hummingbird, or mourning doves, or....

Nice! I never did see that Sellar Jay in our yard again (yet) but Thanksgiving morning I managed to get some shots of a group of Western Blue Birds at a make-shift bird bath. http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-498625-1.html#8408153

We have a couple of Steller Jays that hang around the house year round. They love peanuts, so my wife puts peanuts out for them. They are beautiful birds . . .

I took the liberty of pulling it into LR and pulling out the shadows a bit so you can see the head and teal details a bit more.

Thank you, I will see if I can do the same with Luminar. I developed the original with Canon DPP

Turn your computer off before your next post is, "I just missed them". Most of us will still be here, but it may be a one time shot at the bird. :sm09"

If they have found your feeder has ground spill they will be back - just get ready for them as they can be quite quick -
moving around a lot while feeding - good luck and post your images.
