Filter system, Nikon 14 - 24, and Breaththrough

I’m in search of a filter system to accommodate my arsenal of lenses (Nikon Holy Trinity 2.8, 35 1.4, 50 1.4, 85 1.4, 105 2.8, 18 - 200 dx) and, because of the 14-24 problem child, I have been looking at the Lee and Cokin systems. My research has shown that Breaththrough is a great filter system with virtually no color cast, and they have an X-100 system similar to Lee and Cokin in that you can buy a holder and then adapters to fit each mm of your lens kit with the square filters of your choosing. I spoke with a product manager from Breakthrough and he told me that they are about to come out with a magnetic filter system in January that will eliminate lens leak. Announcements are due in the next few weeks. Yet, even with their new system, one still must buy a totally separate rig to accommodate the 14-24, the one I have on the beach or on the water and always in most need of ND.

I would value all of your opinions on how to get the best filter system for the variety of mm lenses without having to buy a dedicated filter for each one. I shoot landscapes/seascapes and beach portraits on a D750 and D7100 with the above-mentioned kit of lenses. Happy Thanksgiving, Awesome Hogs!

You could buy 77mm screw on filters and step up rings for the smaller lenses. Personally, I don't like stepping up filters, because it interferes with the lens hoods. I also don't like stepping up several sizes. I would at least get a set of 58mm filters.

Then I would get a filter system for the 14-24; preferably one without light leaks so you can use a dark ND.

If you are using graduated filters, you can just hold the filter in front of the lens. I have a set of Tiffen and Cokin rectangular filters, and it's easier to just hold the filter rather than attach the holder.

For ease of use, I recommend the Xume magnetic adapters. The will also work with rectangular filter holders. I especially like them for when I use ND or CPL filters, so I can snap them on when I want the filter and then pull them off when I don't.

The Xume adapters work well, except at ultra wide angle they will vignette (unless you use a step-up ring to a larger size...an argument for using the larger filters). Usually only an issue at 28mm or less. And I generally don't like using anything other than dark ND at those focal lengths.

Thanks, JC. These are great ideas. I will definitely check out the Xume products!

Breakthrough, Breakthrough, Breakthrough. The light quality on their new 100mm NDs is awesome. BUT, the crown jewel is the X100 filter holder and adapter rings. Lee sells the adapter rings for $35, Breakthrough for $7. And the X100 is $40 vs Lee's over $100 cost.

Thank you for your endorsement of Breakthrough. I don't know if I should go with the 100 or wait for the 150 due in the next couple of weeks.
