D7500 VS D500

I recently asked the forum for opinions about getting a D750 vs. a D7500. I currently have a D7100. My 7100 would become my spare. I have a combination of FX and DX lenses: FX: 85 mm F/1.8, 50 mm f/1.4G, 70-200mm f/2.8 G ED VRII, DX lenses: 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G IF-ED, and 17-55mm f/2.8. After doing my own research and reading member's opinions, I decided that the D7500 would be a better bet, given the lenses that I already have. I don't want to buy a new camera and have to replace some of my DX lenses, especially my go to lens, the 17-55mm f/2.8. The D500 caught my eye because all my lenses would be compatible and I know the D500 is the "flagship" Nikon DX camera. I also am aware that the processors are the same, as are the ISO's. I was a little disappointed that the D500 doesn't have a pop up flash. On some occasions, I've had to pop up my flash and use it. My SB600 wasn't in my camera bag at the time.
My photography interests currently consists of shooting grandchildren, landscapes, night photos and community theatre photography. I'm the publicity photographer (amateur) for my theatre group and in addition to posed costumed photos blown up to 11 x 17, also take headshots, and production photos. The production photos are low to moderate to bright light action photos. I usually like to have two cameras with me, one with my 17-55mm attached and one with my 70-200mm on a tripod. Unfortunately, my spare D80 died a shutter's death. So can anyone please give me their opinion about which would be better for my needs, the D7500 or the D500? Thanks so much.

If you desire a 2-camera set-up, go with a full frame for the primary body and your second body as the crop. Personally, I believe in having two of the same as a 2nd inferior body tends to not get used at all when you reach into your bag looking for the right tool ...

Tough choice, but I like my D750. Try some comparison sites.

I've been agonizing over the same decision...upgrading my d7100 to either the d7500 or d500. The d7500 seemed the logical choice since I already had all the accessories...and I never used the 2nd card slot for back-up. I like to shoot a variety of subjects, one of them birding...another air shows. I went with the d500 mainly for the focus system and was recommended by several friends in the camera club. I borrowed a d500 for a day and it paired very well with my 200-500.

My new d500 will be delivered tomorrow. I'm wondering how I will like the grip...never used one before. Most painful part was buying all new memory cards, reader and remotes.

Happy Thanksgiving

I have a D500 and have used a D7500. The D500 has a superior autofocus system, two memory card slots (one is XQD), two Fn (function) buttons, and a bigger view when looking through the viewfinder. They both have pentaprism viewfinders but the D500 has more coverage. The D500 also can shoot through flickering lighting found in sports stadiums. It has a dedicated joystick for moving focus points around. I use it when doing model photo shoots. I have the camera in single point autofocus. I use the joystick to keep the focus point on the model's face.

I see that you're getting a D500. I found out that the video record button to the left and behind the shutter button can be re-programed to execute Mode. If you don't shoot video you might try it. It makes it really convenient to switch between Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, and Manual mode. Mode is in the group of four buttons on the top left of the camera but it's much easier to change using the re-programmed video record button.

Thanks for the reply. I've been checking the d500 videos for set up etc.. Am amazed with all the possible button reprograms. At 74...I hope I can remember any changes I make :-) Really looking forward to using the new camera. Like a kid when playing with new toys.

I was puzzled by the same thing. So I got a Fuji X-T2. I Love it! Good bye Nikon.

The D7500 isn't that much of an upgrade from your 7100, A few more pixles and features and capabilities . . . But . . . The D500 is a serious upgrade, it does everything way better. Get the D500, you'll be glad you did . . . Outstanding camera . . .
