Thanks Voss, it was a very curious scene. it was a pretty chilly morning on a busy street and this guy is totally out of place sitting there with whatever he is looking at, he just looked lost...

Thanks, this was a drive by shooting. I was waiting for a traffic light to change and looked over to the sidewalk and there he was. A chilly morning in rush hour traffic. I was wondering what in the world was this guy doing sitting in the sidewalk. I think it took about six trys to get an clear shot as the traffic was pretty busy between me and him. Thanks for looking :-)

Hello Waegwan,

Great shot. If you were hoping to invoke an emotional response with this image, you surely succeeded. I've seen this image many many times in my past.

I spent almost 2 years stationed in Pohang (US Army, '74-'76) and have many great memories similar to this image. Back then, Pohang was a small rural town/city with a lot of little fishing and farming villages all around the area. Bicycles were the main form of local transportation back then with old busses a close second. I cycled through many of the small villages in the area which were only accessible by barely paved roads and small dirt trails. Today, the whole area is just a big city.

I also spent some time in Daegu and Camp Carroll in the Waegwan area. Those areas were much much smaller then as compared to today.

I had a great time during my tour back then so your image struck a very positive chord with me.

Thanks for sharing.

Mike

Hello Waegwan, br br Great shot. If you were hop... (show quote)

Glad you you enjoyed it Mike. I didn't know there was an Army Camp in Pohang. I knew about the Marine Camp there. Most of the camps have closed or are closing. Camp Henry and Camp Walker are still going strong in Daegu and Carroll is still going strong. Humphreys in Pyongtaek is at least 10 times bigger than it was, they are moving Yongsan to Humphreys. I've been here off and on since 1978, I'm currently at Camp Carroll. Korea has changed so much in the last 15-20 years. Pohang is a pretty big city now. I go down there and work every few months and it takes almost as long to get across the city as it does to get there from Daegu.

Camp Libby was a small petroleum terminal just north of Pohang city proper (Duho Dong). It was the start of the petroleum distribution system for the US and ROK military. I was part of a small contingent of military deep sea divers that maintained the underwater section of the pipeline out in the Pohang bay. Fuel tankers from Japan were unloaded at a mooring site out in the Pohang bay, stored in a tank farm (just north of Camp Libby) and pumped north to Gunsan. There was even a POL terminal in Waegwan, just south of Camp Carroll. Camp Libby was turned over to the Koreans in the early '90s and closed shortly afterwards. I believe this all happened before the Marine camp was established. All that remains of Camp Libby today is a large empty lot surrounded by apartments and a school.

Will look forward to seeing more of your street photos from Korea.

Mike
