It's an immature black-crowned night heron, I believe. We have them here near where I live as well as a few other heron species.

I finally found a picture that looks just like it and you are right! One of these days I might get them right!

Don't feel too bad. Wait 'til you see the immature yellow-crowned night heron. They are so close to the black-crowned it can put you off birds completely! Those herons can be tough to ID when they are youngsters. This past summer, we had a nest of little blues at our rookery. I couldn't spot the chicks to save my life. Then a fellow photographer took pity on me and let me know those chicks are WHITE! Seriously? Had a good laugh about that one. Live and learn. I now carry my Sibley's bird book in my camera gear.
