Len options

I'm considering two different lens purchase options this holiday season. Currently shooting in DX with d7100, my lenses inlcude the 17-55, a 35 and the kit lens 55-200. At some point down the road I expect to switch to a full frame camera, maybe the replacement for the d750. In any case I'd like to hear thoughts about whether to purchase the Nikon 24-70 f2.8 or conversely for about the same cost purchase the 20 f1.8, the 35 f1.8 and the 85 f1.8. The three lenses cover more that the expensive zoom. As I do a combination of landscape and general family portraiture I'm thinking these are both reasonable approaches.

I agree with the 24-70 if you are committed to transitioning to an Fx body. But, please consider the Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2, you will get an awesome piece of glass and will save $800.

The other recommendation would be a Nikon Nikkor AF‑S Zoom 28 ‑ 300mm F/3.5‑5.6.

Interesting that you consider the 24-70 zoom preferable to the 3 primes. Thanks RGP.

Only one lens to worry about. That is better than carrying 3 lenses and trying to switch from one to the other. I would second the 28-300 & also would consider the 24-120 f4.

I use a D750 as my primary digital camera. I would prefer the primes to the zoom. I use a Nikon 24mm and an 85mm, both f/1.8, when I specifically want to take a photo for a large print. I round that out with a Tamron 28-300mm for more general shooting, which I like for its smaller size, weight and price. With just the two primes and a crop sensor back up you have quite a shooting envelope. Toss in your 35mm dx for even more options.

If weight is an issue the 24-70 is not lite. But it is very versatile and comes close to covering the three primes except at the both ends. That said one of my favorite primes is the 85 1.8 and is heavily favored by users on the B&H site.

Also, the 20 mm 1.8 is another outstanding prime. If your serious about FF the Nikon 24 and 28 1.8 are also gold.

If you are not concerned with shooting rapidly changing subjects the primes are likely fine. I shoot a lot of fast moving and fast changing subjects so I use mainly 24-70 and 70-200 Canon lenses.

Best,

Down the road? For me, tomorrow is "down the road." You can get a D750 with Nikon battery grip for a very good price during their Black Friday sale. Go for it! If you wait for the D760 to be announced and then produced and then reviewed... Well, why wait? The 28-300mm is a great lens for that camera.

Zooms have their compromises but they are very convenient and the quality today is exceptional. Prime lenses give you very good image quality but you have to change lenses often and that is not convenient. Those lenses you have in mind are lighter than the zoom.
The 20 and 35 mm lenses will prove to be very useful for your landscape photography while the 85 mm f1.8 is an ideal lens for portraits. I would prefer the 85 mm lens for portraits instead of the 24-70.
I would say go to the store where you are going to buy the lenses, if that is possible, and try them. That to me would be superior to any advise you could receive here.

I would consider these three lenses --"about the same cost purchase the 20 f1.8, the 35 f1.8 and the 85 f1.8."
