Hi All, I've been reading your posts for a while and enjoy them.

I"m in the market for a new Nikon. I'm currently using a D7000 (after a D80) and since last year's Nutcracker I've been reading reviews, comparisons, pros and cons of DX v FF. Long story short, another mom had just gotten a D750 and had no clue what to do with it. I set it for her during the dress rehearsal. We were both using the same Nikon 70-200 lens. Her pictures were so much better than mine. So, after considering what I shoot--portraits of my daughter and her activities -soccer, LAX, softball, basketball, volleyball and ballet recitals and my basketball cheerleaders....would I be better off with with the D500 or the D750? My walk around lens is a Tamron 24-75 / 2.8. I also have a Nikon 70-200, Nikon70-300 and Nikon 50 1.8. It is rare that I don't have a camera with me so I like the idea of the DF--I know another animal...
I saw that both the D500 and D750 will be on sale for Black Friday. The correct answer would be both. But unfortunately, my husband said no.

So, what do you think I would be happier with?

Thank you for sharing your insight and experience.

Hello and welcome from Fayetteville, NC!! I have a Nikon D7000 and decided I wanted to go full frame. I debated between the D750 and the D810 and chose the D750. I love the 750!!! When the 750 first arrived I would shoot photos with both cameras to see how they compared and the 750 was the clear winner. I haven't used the 7000 since and will probably use it and the DX lenses towards a D850 next year. I've heard and read a lot of great things about the D500 so I think you would be happy with either camera. If you have a lot of DX lenses you may want to stay DX and go with the 500. I started buying full frame lenses shortly after buying the 7000 knowing I would move to FF.

Good luck making your decision!

My sole experience with a “Black Friday” sale was two years ago when I bought a factory-refurbished D7100 from Adorama, that was listed on Amazon. Price was $489. When I got it a few days later, the shutter count was just under 600. Looking at it, you wouldn’t know it had ever been touched by human hands. I would have no problem with going for another refurb if and when I ever decide to upgrade. But, for the time being, this is more camera than I’ll ever need. Very happy with it. Just wish I knew how to use all of the functions. :)

I'm happy with the D750, and it will be available at a very good price.

I think you would be happier walking around with your 50mm mounted on a beautiful Df.

A full frame is more camera then you need for what you shoot. The only advantage, for you, may be slightly better low light performance. Is that worth the cost, additional weight and size, and the cost of glass? Probably not. Unless... money is no object and you want what you want. Then, get it.

For sports, I would consider the D500 as it is current generation. It will be available on Black Friday for $ 1800 INCLUDING the battery grip. The D750 is a great camera as well, but I consider the D500 the little brother of the D5. (I have both.) Best of luck.

No reason to reject a full frame camera. It will do a better job for what you shoot than a cropped sensor camera, particularly in dim light. If you can bounce for the D810, do it. You won't regret it. It is so much better than all other offerings from Nikon, with the exception of the D850, getting anything else would be a compromise. You already have the experience of a D7000 vs D750, when you compare a D750 to a D810 you will see another jump in image quality. You can get refurbished D810s for around $2000 or so when they are available. I just picked up a clean used one for $1700 a month ago with 22,000 clicks. It included a second battery, glass screen protector, and an RRS L-Plate.

Although I am usually in-sync with Gene, it's not so here. I do agree that FF is better in low light, I don't consider the D810 a good sports camera. Other than the D5, which is the best, I would suggest the D850, D500 and D750 in that order. This is from actual experience, with the exception of the D750. The D810 has too small of a buffer, which the D850 resolves. Best of luck.

Go to Youtube and watch tutorials for your camera. There should be lots of them. Thats what I did for my camera. Some I watched more than once.

I was between a D7200 and D750. Bought the D750 w/24-120 f/4. I love the low noise at high ISO's of the FF sensor on the 750. My next body will probably be a refurbished D7200 to use as a backup and for extra reach with my telephotos. I use quite a few of my old AI nikkors with this body with no problems except they are manual focus.
