I also agree that #1 is the preferred shot. I think the burn out adds to the photo.
I'd try a heavy crop on the first one, starting just to the left of the nearest tree. It would emphasize the leading line of the road drawing the trees along into the receding view.
The first image puts the trees in context with its surroundings.
The second one simple says... trees... but tells us nothing more.

Definitely the first image is the one to choose! The road gives the viewer a perception of the country. The second image is just trees cropped a bit too much, no story.
I prefer the second shot because the road wants to take me somewwhere.
