I recently purchased a Canon 80D body, and after taking some test shots I loaded them to my computer. When I tried to open them in Photoshop I got an error message stating that my version of PS CS6 did not support the raw file from the Canon 80D. I have gone to the Adobe website looking for an update to the box version of CS6, but to no avail. Is there anyone out there that has had a similar experience, and if so, how did you correct the problem? I am not keen on using Photoshop CC.

The DNG converter should do the trick.

Adobe has a DNG converter that you can download that I use. It takes your RAW files and changes, then you can read into Photoshop

It must drive processing companies crazy having to keep up with every new version of raw that comes along. The camera companies should make something available online that would let older copies of software process their new images. That probably wouldn't work, though, because each processing program would work differently.

My experience of nearly 40 years of working with computers is there is alway back and forth between hardware and software. Today that includes cameras because they are as much computer as camera. It will never change and there is always a bit of lag time in supporting new hardware unless your model is like Apple where you try to control both the hardware and software aspects of the product.

Best,
Todd Ferguson

A question, Bill. I currently use a Canon 60D. I download my raw files directly to Lr5 and import them as DNGs. The newer cameras won’t work with Lr5 (or pscs6). So, once the Adobe raw converter is downloaded to my computer, what is the process for getting the raw files downloaded from my card and into Lr?
Thanks.
Steve

You can't open you raw files natively in an old version of PS. Once a version of an Adobe product has been superseded there are no more updates, including for new cameras profiles. Two options. Update to the current cloud version PS CC, or use the Adobe DNG converter to convert you .cr2 raw files to Adobes proprietary DNG raw format.

Adobe have stopped upgrading CS6 so you cannot open 80D Raw files as has already been suggested. You will either have to use the programme that came with your camera, download the DNG file from the Adobe site or look at using another programme ie Serif Affinity. This is a one off purchase with upgrades as Adobe used to be.

Why not use Canon’s Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? You can download it from the Canon European site ( https://www.canon-europe.com/support/ ), and you probably need the serial number from the bottom of your camera. You can open the raw files, sort and/or modify and then save as a TIFF and import into PS or LR or export directly into PS. DPP’s raw converter is excellent and lower noise than ACR.

This is dobe all over again. You can go to DNG converter but if you are using new Mic 7 or 10 it doesnot work. I had to buy a new pc with Mic 7. I have cs6 and I have download and tried all the new DNGS. I was able to open raw only in the preview of OLD Canon III files. Cannot open the files to view. Seems Dobe leaves a time bomb on DNG's. When you can"t open your old files and it's only a new pc, then this is Dobe's dream come true. Call Dobe and answer is we don't support CS6 on phone. Best to use the disc supplied by Canon to open Raw's. This makes the work flow go down the drain.

I believe that Photoshop CS6 is the end of the line for that software. Adobe is now going to Adobe Creative Cloud which includes photoshop, lightroom and some other stuff. The basic subscription is $9.99 per month. Adobe will keep this updated. I've used this for about a year. I like it.

I beg you pardon. What the heck are you saying? You are not making any sense at all. I get that Dobe is Adobe. Too lazy to add an "A"? I assume that MIC 7 is Windows 7 and MIC 10 is Windows 10, but beyond your odd nomenclature, your post is still a confusing mishmash.

Adobe has a utility you can download that will convert Canon RAW to DNG. No data is lost when converting but it takes a little while to do the conversion. Adobe will no longer update the raw file definitions in the non-CC versions for newer formats. https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/adobe-dng-converter.html
