Hi all,

I'm looking to purchase a macro lens for my D750 in a few weeks (to shoot bugs primarily ) and was wondering if I could get some input (good, bad or indifferent) from first hand users. Also curious to know if purchasing a non-Nikon macro lens is worth considering.

Thanks in advance.

George

I prob shouldn't comment since I don't have one yet but I am dying to get my hands on the Tokina 100mm - The Nikon of course is wonderful but more than double in price and the Tokinas are built like tanks.

I totally get that. Will have to investigate a bit. I've also read that Ziess (sp?) makes a good and compatible macro lens. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, if you can afford it, Ziess pretty much takes the cake on most lenses.

For bugs you will want a 1:1 macro that lets you shoot from a longer distance. I suggest the 150mm or 180mm Macros from Sigma, they are fantastic! Also the Nikon 200mm F4 is quite good and reasonably priced.

I have the tokina macro and my only issue with it is the noise it makes when focusing.

I just saw a similar question. I had Nikon 105 Micro. I wasn't using it enough, so I sold it. Lots of choices.

Tamron has been redesigning all of their SP prime lenses. They all now have vibration compensation, a metal lens barrel, and are fully weather sealed. The new 90mm f/2.8 macro SP VC lens has gotten good reviews. I purchased their new 45mm f/1.8 SP VC lens for my Nikons. I've been very impressed with it.

I have the Sigma 105 F2.8 lens I am selling for $300 plus shipping. I have not used it much, it is a great lens. I am hoping someone will get more use out of this lens.
PM me if interested.

If your budget will allow, the Nikon ED 200mm AF Micro is super sharp, used $850, new $1800. I have the Nikon 105mm AF micro 1:2.8D that I purchased off ebay $260.00 that I like also. The older Nikon 200mm Micro is a manual focus lens can be had for $200/250. I have all three and use on a Nikon D810, like them all, but the Nikon 200mm AF ED Micro is without a doubt the best of the three. Read Ken Rockwell's review of all three.

Happy Shopping!

Very sound advice. Since the OP indicated an interest in shooting bugs, the shorter macros should be avoided. Even some reviewers fail to understand the concept of minimum working distance. Maybe they only shoot dead bugs?

EDIT—. The OP also has a D750. Several of the shorter Nikkor lenses are DX

George I like to go with what the manufacturer makes for the camera, in your case a Micro Nikkor. There are excellent macro lenses made by third parties also and Tamron 90mm f2.8 comes to mind.
In my case I use the 105 f4 AIS Micro Nikkor from the 80's and it doubles, like other macro lenses, as a medium tele or a portrait lens. If you find one in good condition in the used market at a reasonable price that would be a good choice.
More "modern" 105mm f2.8 AI or AIS Micro Nikkors are also available in the used market at very reasonable prices. The macro VR lens made by Nikon is much more expensive and nobody needs VR for macro photography since working from a tripod is a far better option.

Yes. The Nikon 105G is an excellent macro lens for the D750. The 105G can be used for portrait work although the new 105 (non-macro) has awesome bokeh.

One of the finest lenses ever made was the Nikon 60mm Macro AF 2.8 D. And, you ebay offers many in Mint condition. Mine is over 15 years old and still takes shots like it was a puppy. Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.
