I was disappointed that I didn't get the blurred effect with the props, but at least I got the shot: 3 kinds of "flyers", birds, jet, osprey. This was shot on-the-fly, close to the Arch in St. Louis at 1/3000, f6.7, 400 ISO, 190mm. In LR the Exposure Program says Normal, not sure what mode that means. What shutter speed would have given me the nice blurred props?

From about 1/125th to around 1/250th would give some pretty good results.

You could get the shutter duration down to 1/focal length, by dropping the ISO to 100 & stopping down.

An related question to the prop blur issue: did you add the vignette to this image? If not, there seems to be a significant fall off to the edges. Which lens was this?

Thanks

BTW - the pretty large spot just above and right of the prop plane is sensor dust. Use your LR spot remover with the heal brush to remove.

Certainly not 1/3000.

Shooting at 1/3000 will stop anything. You'll have to lower your shutter speed to, anywhere, from 1/100 to 1/250 to get that blurred effect. Also, you might try setting your ISO at 100.

I think you'll have to go on the low side of that range. Lifting props don't spin so fast as pulling props.

As a pilot would say, "Bogey at 2:00."

Have you ever seen videos of helicopters with the rotors seeming to stand still? That's caused by the shutter speed and chopper blades being in sync.

You could lower the shutter speed and switch to rear curtain sync, this would provide blur on the trailing edges of the props.
Hope this helps.

You will need a relatively slow shutter seeing as the prop diameter is so large they by necessity go very slow compared to most props one is used to photographing.
