You've read the old reviews, right?

"[T]he 1D IV is an ideal tool for photographers in all disciplines, but it is the ultimate tool for photojournalists and sports/action photographers who absolutely cannot miss a shot. When you must (or want to) capture the shot, regardless of the shooting conditions and subject speed, this is the camera to do it with." Bryan Carnathan, Feb-2010

The specs are still impressive although the processor (DIGIC 4) and 16MP sensor are now a few generations behind the cutting-edge. The 1.3 crop @ 10fps is a lot of capability that still only the top sports models exceed.

I have a 1D MkIII and 1Dx MkII so I am familiar with the 1D cameras. I think you have to really look at why you want this camera and what you plan to shoot. It was and is a good camera. The 1.3 crop factor like the 1D MkIII makes it a bit of an oddball. It will only use EF lenses. It is very ruggedly built and of course is heavy with the large size, large battery and built in vertical grip.

I would take a very serious look at a 7D2 new or refurb before spending money on the 1DIV. Resolution and focus systems are two things to compare. I suspect that the 7D2 is as good or better in both cases. Either will shoot 10FPS too. ISO performance is the other thing I would compare...which one performs better at higher ISO settings. Personally I would not pay over $1000-$1200 for the 1DIV in very nice condition.

The other issue is whether you want an integrated vertical grip or not. You can add and remove that from the 7D2 of course, but it will add to the cost too. You also have to think about whether you want to shoot with wide lenses, the EF and crop factor will work against you with the 1DIV in that case.

If you are looking mainly for 10 FPS for sports you can get a good 1D MkIII in the $500-$600 range. It is only 10mp but can take some very nice photos... Look some up on Flicker.

Best,
Todd Ferguson

Thanks for the reply I currently own the 7dmkii i love it. I shoot baseball and hockey. I ultimately want the 1dx but its cost prohibited for me so i thought the 1dmk4 would be a good alternative.
Thanks

Photographers-on-the-net.com has a good classified ad section and frequently has 1DMKIVs for sale. Prices are generally as good as you will find anywhere. These are typically individuals selling equipment.

OK, the 7D2 is a good choice for a crop sensor sports camera, Canon's best currently. I would save your money for the 1Dx and keep an out for a used one too. I believe SharpShooter told me he recently purchased a 1Dx for under $2000 used. They are rated at 300,000 shutter clicks life or more. So even one with 200,000 has some good life left in it. A 5D4 might be another good FF option. Depends what sports you shoot and if you really need 10 FPS which you already have in the 7D2. I bought my 1D MkIII with about 15,000 and it has about 40-45K on it now probably. Still a lot of life in it but it is pretty much a spare now. Good luck with your decision.

Best,

Be very careful; most of these have had a VERY hard life; I looked at one that was listed as "light signs of use". When I actually held the camera, I was horrified at the condition, plus the shutter count was over 400,000 !!

If shopping for a 1DX, I'd monitor the for-sale section of Birds As Art at http://www.birdsasart-blog.com/used-photography-gear-for-sale/ Gear comes and goes here, sometimes in minutes. So if you're ready to buy, you probably should check at least once a day.

Don, I don't know if you're looking specifically for the lV because of the crop or simply because it's a top of the line sports model?
I ask because the cost of the 1Dx has come down almost to the same cost and the increased mp will pretty much mitigate the crop factor.
I started to seriously look for a used 1Dx in the spring and found one with 185K in good shape for $1750. In my looking I found also quite a few at $1900 but they had a bit more use on them. I found that ebay either had junkers at $1900 or in really good shape for $3K etc.
I got mine on Craigs list and drove 25 miles to meet the guy half way.
BUT, I have the large San Francisco market within driving distance, don't know where you're at.
Just some thought, good luck!!!

Yes, a lot of that out there. But, if it was $1700 the shutter can be replaced for something like $350 making it a $2000 camera, and that's assuming the shutter even goes out???
The key is to look till you find one that you like the condition and the price!

It looks like the 1DIV & 7DII are very close in DR but I would imagine the 1.6x crop factor might give a little more reach over the APS-H 1.3x factor. I don't know how important this is to you but only the 1D series has spot metering linked to AF points. There is no doubt the 1DIV has a more robust body. I'm sure if you looked deeper, you might find some features the 7DII might have the 1DIV doesn't simply because of the newer technology but I can tell you, I still use my 1DIV for birding and love that body.

Which has the better focus system, the 7D2 or the 1DIV? I know my 1D MkII has only 19 focus points. The 1Dx MkII has 61 and a much more sophisticated focus system than the 1D MkIII. The other thing to consider might be f stop that the autofocus will work at and how many points. The 7D2 might win in that area too.

Best,
Todd Ferguson
