Hey fellow photo nerds I shoot Flat Track and Speedway dirt track events with main events after sundown ! need something with very fast recycle time , usually within 10 -20 feet of bikes on short tracks with 20 to 30 mph approach speeds . Don’t have unlimited funds so looking for best bang for the buck solutions don’t mind using an external battery source. Thanks for the feedback 😎

I like to shoot stock car racing on a dirt track. Because of the dust in the air I seldom use flash. I have a Nikon SB900 flash that I use at the few times that the dust is absent. I prefer to raise the iso and adjust the white balance as needed. I shoot in shutter priority and seldom exceed 160th of a second.

I also prefer to stand further back to facilitate smoother panning (avoid jerking). It is easier to leave more background and crop to improve the composition as needed.

No, I haven't. When using the flash I usually have a specific car or group in mind. I shoot in burst mode so often the second shot (all ambient light) looks better. The track lighting is not that bad in three areas. A lap takes about 13 seconds so recycle time is not much of a problem. The flash gets the most use for the trophy presentations. I used to shoot the races for the use by he newspaper. I now shoot for my own fun. I enjoy the race atmosphere.
