Canon 24-105 new VS old

Ok, so I pulled the trigger & bought the Canon 5d Mark IV. I really want to like this camera, but is seems so much heavier than my 70D with 15-85 lens that I really like.
I realize it is not that much of a difference in weight, but it feels like it. Maybe it is that the 24-105 is longer & heavier and the balance is different.
Here is my question. I got the new version 24-105. I understand the older version is a little smaller & lighter and some may say as good as the new version. Has anyone upgraded
from the old to the new and is there much of a noticeable difference in weight?
I would really consider getting the older version of the lens if it would help the weight issue out and help me to like the Mark IV.
Believe it or not, I have seriously considered returning (if possible) or selling the Mark IV due to weight..... and going back to the crop frame most likely the 80D.
Thanks so much!

A simple online search reveals 575g versus 795g.

Yes, but I am looking for the actual feel, it does not seem like much difference but it can feel very different if the balance is better.

IMHO, I would not return the 5D4. It’s one of the most capable FF cameras made, and when you need its performance in low light high ISO situations, you won’t remember the weight, just the fact that it delivers the goods. Also remember that part of the weight is due to the rugged build and weather sealing - it’s a real professional grade camera vs prosumer grade (not to denigrate the 80D, which is a fine camera, but not in the league with the 5D4). Regarding the 24-105 f4L MKI vs Mk2, the IQ is generally considered to better on the MKII and the MKI (which I have) has a known ribbon cable failure issue. I’ve had mine for 4 years without the failure, but the repair cost is $300-$400 If it does. The weight difference is 4.4 oz. although it may seem counterintuitive, adding a battery grip (even if you only use one battery), while adding weight, will help the combination feel more balanced with a heavier lens. Yes, a 5D4 plus an L quality lens (and maybe a battery grip) isn’t a light weight, but it’s what many pros are shooting, and there’s a reason. Only you can decide if the performance and ruggedness are worth it. I admit I cringe occasionally when I pick up my 5D3, battery grip and 70-200 f2.8L, but when I’m shooting sports or weddings or events in low light, I forget all of that.

Here's what Ken Rockwell had to say about them:

Hope that's of some help.

Wow, looks like he likes the 24-105 STM. Thanks for the link!

As per a previous comment, keep in mind the old 24-105 is not long lasting, due to a known ribbon cable fault (i think). Mine failed at around 17,000 clicks.

I'm not a body builder, but the weight of camera and lens has never bothered me. After carrying it around for a while, it becomes the normal weight, and I get used to it. Picking up a lighter body surprises me. It's like buying a slightly larger or smaller car. At first, driving it can be intimidating, but it soon becomes normal.

As for the lenses, you can find lots of sites that give specs and weights for lenses. There are also some that compare images taken with both. The links below might help, but I bet you'll be pleased with images from both of them.

I've used both lenses extensively, and have a strong preference for the MkII. I'm 82 yrs old, and far short of the strength I had as a youngster, but the weight of the MkII is no problem. I find the IQ of the MkII better in many circumstances too.
Have you looked at the manner in which you hold the camera/lens combination?

I have a Canon 5D Mark III and I plan on upgrading to a IV today. It's bundled with the 24-105 II as you describe. I also read that the Mark IV is somewhat lighter than the III so I'm looking forward to it.

I also went fron the 70D to the canon 5d Mark IV. I love my new camera. I also loved the 70D, however the 5d Mark IV is in a different league. I didn't notice the weight difference. I even have a grip on mine. The difference in your quality of photographs should speak volumns.

I have the old version that I'd be willing to swap straight across if you like. Good condition and works like a million bucks.

If truly concerned about weight, then buy a good lens strap that relieves the weight.

And if big-guy backs out, I’ll be next in line - my MKI is in perfect condition 😁.
