I remember when the studio I worked in purchased their first production digital video camera. This was a $40,000 Hitachi. Since we did a lot of multiple camera studio work, we had to degrade the Hitachi, so that the resolution wasn’t markedly different from the 3 tube cameras that we used along with the Hitachi. Computers could not handle a lot of footage, so we had to load 12 minute segments in the source decks for A-B roll edits. We would then, delete the source video and reload for the next segment. Times have changed.

I do not know if they have stopped at 24 megapixels. I know that is the were they are right now. Samsung on the other hand had 28 megapixel Aps-c camera and that camera is actually excellent. But no longer produced.
On the other hand Nikon included 8K time lapse in the new D850. That may be an indicatior that they will be looking more at 8K capabilities for their coming camera generations.

I noticed that there have been a lot of models in succession now that have stayed at 24 megapixels. They are the D3200, D3300, D3400, D5200, D5300, D5500, D5600, D7100, and D7200.

It matters if the resolution of the original is good enough. Once you see today's 4K set with appropriately good 4K programming it's hard to look at a 1080p screen without being a bit disappointed.

Every time I hear 'sales gimmick' I think 'next year's standard'. That goes all the way back in my memory to auto exposure. The magazine's were saying it was only for amateurs. Nikon developed an early VR, but only put it (IIRC) in a point and shoot. All the things that can't be done because --- somebody is working on, now we can.

There is a lot of discussion here about resolution. People think there is no need for more resolution in camera sensors and even if resolution is increased the lenses will be a limiting factor.

But we have only had a few years now with 4K resolution and TV producers are already starting to make 8K television. And the plan for the Olympic games in Japan in just over 2 years from now is to record and broadcast in 8K.

For those who do not know 8K is about 33 megapixels. So I am guessing that all serious camera manufacturers will offer cameras with 8K and 33 megapixel sensors 2-3 years from now. That means not only in full frame cameras, but also Aps-c, m4/3 and 1" cameras and top of the line cameraphones.

What do you think about this?

Remember that the Nokia cellphone had a 42mp sensor. They leaped a little too far without having enough quality from the 42mp sensor.

I was impressed with the 4K TV's at the store until I started inquiring about 4K broadcast TV - which at that time was nonexistent. The 4K TVs at the stores were showing special 4K DVDs or BluRays. I don't know that even now there is a lot of 4K broadcast or cable television.

Millions (worldwide) of people can afford high resolution DSLR cameras, and will gladly upgrade. That will be good news for used camera sales.

i felt the same way, Jerry. Then I saw a UHD (ultra high definition) and was blown away. As soon as there is enough programming, I'll make the switch. By then my old Sony will be ready to retire.

High MP sensors are a bunch of marketing crap! It’s just a ploy to get you to buy a new camera every couple of years.

STD Def to 1080p was a game changer.
1080p to 4K was "interesting" but not enough of a differentiator to make it into an investment decison criyeria (cameras or TVs). (I bought my 5Dmkiv and the crappy crop 4k with bloated video codec did not enter into the decision...obviously :-)

Where I can see the next game changer is when my TV/Audio can be rolled out at 4'×8' onto a flat wall and at few millimeters thick with viewing angles right up to 180deg. Then 8k becomes awe inspiring and overwhelmingly good as the resolution becomes more important.(Btw, that tech already exists in RnD from an audio perspective...)
...for now 1080 is fine.

I think given time it will not end there. The people that can't or won't upgrade have nothing to fear, its all downward compatible. Personally I'm looking forward to all of it and hope to be around to partake.
