Maybe they figure the wonderment at what the message is will slow people down or figure they will be laughing too hard to go fast

We once lived on a street used by some as a speed short cut. The town refused to install a speed bump. I silly painted a wide yellow "line" across the road. You would be amazed at its effectiveness.

Maybe the 2nd "P" wasn't the problem, maybe the first "P" should have been an "L" because the person doing the job was in a state of SLEEP!

Having worked on a road marking crew, let me assure you that these things happen. This can be a mind numbing experience with pressure to produce, produce, produce. This just been painted (note the glass beads still on the road, used to make the legend reflective). I’ll bet the picture was taken by the ‘painter’s’ partner and posted at the shop for all to see. I remember when one of the other crews painted SHOOL CROSSING. I’m pretty sure the photo is still on the wall 40 years later as an educational warning.

By the way, quit knocking Public Works! They work hard for you and mistakes happen. EVERYTHING they do is trying to make life less difficult for their whole community. Can you say that about your job? How would you like having 65,000+ people watching everything you do and then publicly ridicule you for your mistakes. OK, sorry, off my soapbox.

No offense intended, but here's a joke. It was told to me by a public works worker.

Two guys set out in their truck from the town garage to do some work. When they arrived at the site, they discovered that they didn't have their shovels - a big problem! One of them called the town garage to tell them about the situation.

"We got to the site, but our shovels aren't in the truck. What should we do?"

"Hold on. I'll check with the supervisor."

A few minutes later, he came back to the phone. "Okay, I spoke to the boss, and he's sending out a couple of shovels. In the meantime, just lean on each other."

I can assure you they don’t! They’re the laughing stock of the whole community, and even worse, the other crews.

I can think of lots of " highly educated" non union members that can't spell either! Sometimes, it seems that the most book-smarts someone has, the less common sense they possess.
