I removed my SD card from my camera and on the way to the computer, I got a "Honey do," request. Put it in my pocket and forgot about it. The next day, I found it in the bottom of the close dryer, nice and clean. It seems the wife didn't go through the pockets before doing the laundry (usually, my trick😉) and washed and dried it. I put it in the PC and downloaded all my pictures. It worked. I put it back in my camera, formatted the card and took a few pics, and they are there. So now a question for you Hoggers: keep and use the card; buy a new one and keep the washed card as a back up; or just buy a new one and throw the washed card away? Thanks!

You Proved it works Flawlessly. Put a mark of some sort on the label, and toss it the 1st sign of any problems. It'll probably last as long as a new one anyhow.

Apparently there is some doubt in your mind or you wouldn’t ask. If I had doubt about a memory card I would toss it and replace it.

That being said, I personally would not be afraid to use it.

probably fine, i did the same to a tiny USB stick, was on a string around my neck and went in the wash with a T-shirt absolutely no problem with it since. Carry on using it but carry a spare. Probably something you should do anyway.

When they are made, they are washed in water. As long as it is dry there is nothing to worry about.

I would keep it as a backup. There are chemicals in detergent that might eventually affect the card.

True but it also had several rinse cycles too.

I would be much much more concerned about the heat than about anything else. You don't want its moment of failure to be just after you took a special picture. I would toss it and purchase a replacement,

I had a card fall out on the ground, and then found it again a year later. The images were OK after 12 months in the weather, but I did retire the card.

Thanks, all! I will very likely buy a replacement, but not necessarily tomorrow. I figured there would be someone on this forum that had experienced something like this in the past.

Now that I think of it, I remember that the very first "thumb drive" I ever had {it was bundled with one of my desktop computers} went through the washer and dryer once - I wasn't used to having it. It stopped being reliable, so I got rid of it. I cannot guarantee that the washer + dryer caused the unreliability {correlation does not imply cause-and-effect}, but

It depends how important your pictures are to you. If you feel you're willing to risk them on an SD card that may likely be compromised by water and detergent, but all means keep using it. If it were me, that card would already be in the garbage. You may also want to consider changing the way you manage your SD cards. Shoving a card into your pocket is a recipe for disaster, as you found out.

I was taught that to make mistakes is human. To repeat mistakes is stupid. I've proven I'm human. Time will tell on the rest of it...

A young woman killed her husband in Arizona some years ago. She washed and dried his clothes in the washing machine and put them in a tumble dryer, to remove evidence. She removed everything from his pockets, she thought, except for a SD card. The Photos on it were still preserved. It was crucial in her conviction and sentencing to prison. Those SD cards are tough. However, I would replace it.

Yes, that's not an unusual experience. Unusual would be if the card didn't work.
