Where did you get a lens like that? You may have to shoot on Manual. You may also want to look into a lens supporting arm for your tripod:

650-1300 f/8-16 I believe you have. Eek, f/16 ??? That is pretty dim, you will have to crank your ISO up I think to get shots. I found a Youtube video with that lens that looked pretty soft here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ksih_SYjC4

If it is the Samyang MF 650-1300mm f8.0-f16.0 you don't have a lot of light to play with and as someone has already pointed out, you will have to increase the ISO and a sturdy tripod will be a must. Think also about the use of a Gimbal head for the tripod, this will offer controllable stability.
It all depends on what your interest is in your photography.
If it is fast moving sports shots or bird-life a Gambal head will almost be a must-have.

I have not used one of those lenses but it sounds like you will be banging up against several of the laws of physics using this. Firstly you have an extreme focal length, which means to avoid camera shake you need an extremely high shutter speed, the 1/focal length guide means you need to have 1/1300 in theory. Then you have the ghastly f/16 max aperture which means you will need a drastically high ISO except in very good light. The third problem you will have is for the price you pay for those lenses you are not talking wonderful optics, which all adds up to a hard to use, hard to focus lens with poor image quality. Oh well, could be good for a laugh

I have one of those cheap 500mm f8 max manual Kalimar (made in Korea). Actually not that bad of a lens for the money (new something like $170, got mine used for around $30 in near new condition). I've taken lots of hand held shots and 250-500th second works pretty well, although I've shot as slower speeds. Having a tree to brace the lens against or post to rest it on really helps. The image quality is much better than the old 400mm f6 Spiratone Sharpshooter I had, none of that very obvious vignetting. You should get a lot of fun out of it.

Here's a photo I took with it during a controlled grass burn that wasn't burning to well.

hand held
hand held...

Set it for f8 and if the subject is still, set the shutter for 1/500th minimum on a tripod then put the camera in 'live view mode and adjust the ISO until the image on screen looks good. Take a couple of shots and check your histogram for proper exposure. If you are shooting moving animals, you need a faster shutter speed like 1/1600th. That lens is probably a manual focus lens so you probably won't have much luck on moving animals until you master focusing at the same time you shoot. Not impossible, but difficult.

I don't know much about that lens but a lot of feedback to the camera might be non existint i.e. exposure, f-stop, etc.

OMG! what kind of pictures are you taking that you needed that kind of lens???

Are you a spy? You could see Russia from Sarah Palin's back yard with that lens........Oh wait, you can see Russia
from her back yard without any telephoto lens. forgot.

Now if your trying to shoot down sattilites and take wedding pictures from another state (while still standing in your own backyard) then bravo for you......

Question? You only have a Canon 60D for that lens? I would think you would have gone for the top of the line camera with a lens that can fired a missile.
