Hello, looking for some help, opinions on a good travel camera. I'm looking for something compact with zoom capabilities, I know many of these have limitations with sensor size but still want something compact that will take adequate pictures. I would like to keep the price range between $400 & 500, two I've come across that seem to fit this category are the Cannon Sx60 & the LumixTZ80, I'm sure there are many more. Does anyone have any experience with these camera's, your thoughts on them would be appreciated. Thanks to any response to my inquiry.

The Canon SX60 is a Bridge camera that has a focal range to 1365mm and it has a viewfinder and shoots RAW. The Panasonic TZ80 is a quality compact camera. It all depends what type of camera you are comfortable with, and what features you want. Good luck.

There is one more option you should look at, the Lumix TZ100. It has good zoom range and is at a similar price. It is also very compact, fits some pockets well. And it has a lot of good reviews. Seems to be one of the best travel cameras on the market today. The main advantage over the TZ80 is a much bigger sensor and better image quality.

The TZ100 is known in the USA as the ZS100. My wife has one has her only camera. She is a good photographer and gets wonderful images with that camera.

Check out the Sony HX 400. Right now, it goes for just under $450.00. It has a large, 1" sensor and features a Carl Zeiss lens with built in image stabilization. Check out the reviews. The I.Q. is second to none. It does not shoot in RAW, but so what? It doesn't have to. Sony is famous for their Jpeg quality. Get a hold of james56 for an honest opinion of this camera.

That camera has a 1" sensor, which explains its high cost of $700. I wouldn't mind owning one. Focal range goes out to 250mm, which is above my minimum requirement of 200mm in a compact camera.

With Black Friday later this month there could be an opportunity soon to get this camera for a lot less than $700.

That's only about three weeks away. I'll be on the lookout.

I bought the Canon for travel purposes. I own a nikon 7100 and had a coolpix. The Canon is compact and easy to carry and it takes great pictures even when you do night photography.

Consider the Nikon B700. Zooms out to 1400mm eq, and reviews show it to be a good camera. It fits right into your price range.

I have had good luck with a Nikon B700. It shoots raw and has a very large zoom range. It is fun and in your price range. I picked it over the sx60. If you can, take a sd card to a photo store and take some sample shots. That helped me with my decision.

The Panasonic Lumix ZS100 is a great camera. It’s only shortcoming is a rather limited zoom range of 250mm eq. This may or may not be an issue for you. It has a digital zoom that is a rough equivalent to Sony’s clear image zoom. I haven’t read where anyone has used this. It should give you about a 500mm reach. I just don’t know how the image quality would suffer.
