Can I load Picasa to my Ext. HD?

I have Picasa on my internal HD and use it for organizing images.
One of my photo teachers (Dave McCain) recommended it way back when, and I've used it ever since. Now that I've filled up my laptops HD I had to start utilizing an external HD. Can I download Picasa to that HD, or all others, and take advantage of Picasa's image organizing criteria?
Thanks,
Marion

You should be able to over ride the default install location. Then once the program is installed on the Ext. HD get the icon that launches the application to point to the app on the Ext. HD. At that point the internal drive would have all the cataloging for the files that it knows and the external drive will know where the files are that it stores. I'd go ahead and try it just to test it.

One thing to try is this. First, disable the current launch icon for Picasa. The easiest way to do that is to simply rename the internal Picasa, call it Picasa-internal. Then try to launch Picasa. It should fail. That's a good thing. Then install the Ext. location and create, if it isn't done by the install program, the icon to launch the Ext. Picasa. Then, use that icon to launch the Ext. install. That should work. Now you know which icon launches which version. Rename the Int. install of Picasa back to its original name and use its icon to launch the internal version. Then all you need to do is keep the icons straight.

Why exactly do you need to install Picasa on your external drive. If its on your computers internal hard drive that's all you need. From within Picasa just point to the location of your images on the drive they are on. Its not like any of your images are actually stored in Picasa. The program only indexes their actual location, regardless of whether its an internal or external hard drive.

What's unclear is why she needs to run the program from her external hard drive. I wonder if she's confused and thinks her images are actually stored in Picasa.

I'm not to 'puter literate. I'm aware that Picasa does not actually store the images. Just locates them on my HD. I don't have a clue as to how to "point" to an ext. HD in Picasa.
Thanks for the reply,

Just go to the File menu. Under it you can add a new folder to Picasa or a new file. When you add a new folder it bring up the folder manager or whatever its called on a Mac. From there select the location of your external drive and the folder on that drive. Alternatively, If you set Picasa to scan your computer, it will find images on every attached drive.

I have tried to find a place where I could download Picasa but all I can find are places that I don't trust. Does anyone here have a copy of Picasa I can download?
