Two young white tail deer stags were foraging in my backyard. I grabbed my camera and took this shot through the sliding glass door.

Nice photo. Looks like they are quite happy in your backyard. They don't seem to be overly concerned about anything.

Even with all the people living in NJ deer seems to have adapted well and survive in spite of the dense population. Nice capture

Except for those that wind up dead along I-287 and I-78. Plus who knows how many along the country side roads. On my trips from the Albany, NY area to the Harrisburg, PA area I see more dead deer in New Jersey than in New York or Pennsylvania.

Really good photo. It looks like it could be a painting by a really talented artist.

I read somewhere that there are more deer in NJ now than there were before Columbus discovered the new world. Also, by 1907, all the native NJ deer were hunted to almost extinction. These deer shown are descendants of Virginia deer that were used to replenish the breed for sports hunters in the 1910s and 1920s. In NJ you cannot hunt deer with rifles, only with shotguns or bows. You cannot discharge a firearm within 400 ft. of a house. With the increased building of houses in the suburbs and exurbs, hunting locations have been greatly reduced. There are no natural enemies of the deer left in NJ and with milder winters, the deer population has increased appreciably.

I read somewhere that there are more deer in NJ no... (show quote)

Therefore, the deer's new natural enemy is the motor vehicle!

Unfortunately that is a by product of not only the dense population but the use of NJ highways by travelers heading north and south.
