Back in the day (film day that is), I had a 36 exposure film in my camera. Kept shooting and advancing and when the indicator showed 45 I knew something was amiss. Checked the film and all that showed was the leader. I had not secured it properly in the take-up side so no pictures. *&%^$#@! Luckily they were all just snap shots so no big deal. We do learn, don't we???

Been there and done that. Now I tension the take up reel and watch for the knob to turn as I wind off the leader.

All,

I'm venting here and since its Friday afternoon you all get a laugh at my expense. Shot senior night at local high school. Was there to shoot game pix of neighbor player(volunteer job, not paid) and got drafted at last second. Used secondary crop camera with 17-55 APC(Canon) 2.8 lens. Pix look nice on screen but someones wants a 5x7. Low and behold my MP picture size is very small. Scratching my head and a few WTFs later I realize while I was shooting RAW my camera was set to "sRAW" or something like that so low resolution. Idiotic stuff like this- maybe I'm too scatterbrained to be a decent photographer. I need to take a couple of deep breaths and check everything 20 times.
Ok now go on and laugh and shoot something good :)

This is how most of us learned. And, learning from your mistakes is the best way to learn. But, honestly, I think you will be fine to 5X7. Don't beat yourself up, learn and move on.

Freshman year in high school the camera clubs camera was dropped and I being the one in the club to bring a camera was "chosen" to take over. Me and my Kodak Brownie with flash some how got a full roll of 12 exposures to last the whole game. I wa so excitedas a freshman that I never advanced the film, although that one frame sure was interesting! It happens to us all. LOL

It has happened to ALL of us at sometime with some camera. You are not alone. Write it off to experience and make a funny story out of it to tell your friends when your ego has recovered!

I have some very acceptable 8 x 10's from my 2mp Canon that was one of the first digital cameras to be sold commercially. I can't imagine anything from a modern camera that would not render nice prints up to that size.

Stuff happens. Learn from it. I took a boat trip to see wildlife in Costa Rica and found I'd shot about 100 shots with WB set to fluorescent. Fortunately I shoot RAW so it was an easy fix in post. Some things you can't undo. Like showing up with your camera all set to go and discovering you left your SD cards at home.

My first 36 exp roll had the same problem in my new Canon F1. And I was shooting a family members wedding!! I switched to my backup camera (Fuji ST705) and re-shot what I could. I blame Canon. If the film isn't moving, the counter shouldn't advance. After that, I made sure that the film leader was jammed into the slot as far as it would go. And I advanced past the first frame just to be sure. At least that can't happen now with my Canon 20D or my Nikon D7000.

I will now confess my scatter brain screw up. Shot a bunch of outdoor sunny day shots and could not figure out why most of them had the highlights brown out. Don't shoot these kinds of images with SPOT metering!!

Ah so! Been there, done that. I was using a custom loaded 42 shot roll (thin base and a special reuse able canister) I was doing nesting swallows under a building's roof over hang from my house across the street using a 60x high end spotting scope with adapter. I got distracted and hit 75 on the counter, sprocket holes tore out on the leader.

Nothing to laugh about. Obviously, lots of people in this group have had similar issues. I personally thought I made a mistake once - but I was wrong!
