I remember something called "Stick Tack". It was used in little balls to stick papers to walls temporarily. But Tacky Wax, nope never heard of it.

I’m suprised some senior photographers haven’t responded. Tacky Wax was sold by camera stores. It was used to position small items like rings when photographing them.

Despite the suggestive name, it is wax for surf boards. From Mr. Zog. I remember seeing it printed on T-shirts.

I believe it is also called "museum wax." It is used to keep a picture straight on the wall and can be removed without leaving any residue. It is also used to keep pieces from sliding around on shelves and stands.

Recently purchased a can of it for my wife's artwork.

Wife used to use it all the time for her expensive Christmas figurines on the mantel.
