You should not be carrying that particular lens that way ! ...simple.

True for this lens and any / all lenses that extend with zoomed and do not have a lock. Locks being a design improvement Canon has been making in their zoom lenses, even in the EF-S line.

Is the Canon 100-400 L II worth the extra $600-700? I'm thinking of buying the II. I'm not a pro but take extreme pride in my wildlife photos. Can the above average photographer see the difference.
One does not have to be above average to see the difference, they are like 2 totally different lenses in IQ!

That's why I sent it back.
I had the strap around my neck, and would cradle the lens in my left arm most of the time. But occasionally, I would need to use both of my hands to negotiate the ground I was walking over, and that's when the "Trombone" effect clunk/thunk happened.
Both versions of the 100-400 have an adjustable brake to keep the lens from extending while carrying. Works very well.

A friend of mine has BOTH 100-400's AND the 70-200 with 2X so I think I will do a test and post it here........soon

I have owned both. I am not a pro by any means, I do have fun taking photos.
I saw an immediate difference with the MII lens.
Also I love the incredible close focusing capability it has over any other lens in it's class and that includes all the 70-200mm lenses made by anybody.
It is like getting a near macro lens as a bonus.
So for me it is well worth the difference in price. Also being newer it will likely remain on the repairable list far longer if something, God forbid, happens to it.
Amortize the cost over the life of the lens and it is worth the price for sure.
